Rough Cold Start, IPR?

just picked up a 97 CCLB 4x4 E40D last weekend and noticed it has a bit of a rough start different then what i have dealt with on past OBS

no matter if its hot or cold outside( we have had both -5C and +25C in the last week here in Calgary haha)

If its been sitting for more than 12 or so hours without running it doesn't like to start on first crank, it fires a bit and kind of sputters out and dies and then immediately fires on the second crank and runs like a top, doesnt miss a beat at all, if i shut it off and fire it up even a couple hours later it fires up fine, just not when its sitting.

i am thinking maybe sticky IPR? the glow plugs and harnesses/gaskets were done about 3 years ago and injectors/injector o rings done about 4 years ago

when it does fire I do get a little bit of white smoke, nothing crazy but it hasn't been real cold yet either.

I also notice that after I do get it running(the second time) my TS6POS doesn't work, I need to shut the truck off and start it again and then its fine, it doesn't seem to like the rough starts.

Before I pull the IPR to clean it is there any checks I can do with my Auto Enginuity to see if its the IPR?

Thanks
Dustin

Also forgot to mention i notice the WTS light only stays lit for about 3 seconds, no matter how cold or hot the truck is.

I am going to try and throw a Snowplow relay on later today, that woke my last truck up.

Thanks
Dustin

IPR O rings usually cause a hard start when the engine is hot. The WTS light is about right unless its really cold out. A little white smoke is probably because you had to crank on it and its unburned fuel. I don't know what to tell you about the TS?

I would try pulling the TS chip and see if you still have the hard start issue without the chip.

What Nate said. That seems to have happened to a few guys on here IIRC.

Yes I put a western plow relay on like I have with all my other 7.3 s I seem to be getting a longer WTS now but it's still rough start.

I'd pull the valve cover then injectors solenoids and and check armature clearance.

Sounds like worn injectors.

I would check gp's and pigtails.

Also after sitting when it would mess up check hop res level. That problem I had years ago was reminicant of your issues.

hmmm worn injectors, really?

i have had trucks with allot more km on then this one and have never encountered that. seems odd i'm also not sure how to check the armature clearance? what about buzz testing them with Auto Enginuity?

As for harnesses and such, they gaskets and harnesses have been replaced 3 years ago according to PO, who is a trustworthy guy, but it doesn't appear the pigtails have, i cant see any major damage to them but maybe its worth replacing just because.

I know i'm a bit spoiled because on my last truck i did all injector o rings. 8 new glow plugs, new VC gaskets and pigtails, a western plow relay and a brand new IPR from ford, so that ting fired right up with pretty much no smoke no matter how cold.

anyone have a link to the GP/VC gasket test procedure?

on a side note i noticed my CCV is leaking more than any other truck ive had, could this be a related issue or nah?

Thanks
Dustin

My injectors only had 202k miles on them and they were done. To check poppet clearance, you uncover the injectors, remove the 4 torx screws that hold the solenoid to the back of the injector and then measure the clearance between the square armature plate and the injector body. If you can get a .003 feeler gauge in there, you're dealing with pretty good injectors. Less than that and they're worn internally. Mine, I could get a .002 in there, but not a .0025 or .003. Swapped in a good used set I borrowed from a buddy and the truck runs like a champ.

For the leaking at the CCV, that could be an indicator of some excess blowby or it could just need a couple o-rings.

hmm so weird that it runs great otherwise, i guess i may have to pop the covers to determine it, was just trying to avoid that without knowing my problem for sure haha not that its really a hard job or anything.

hopefully not blowby, seems to be fine, no smoke outside dipstick like my last couple trucks and this thing just runs so damn nice, pulls good, very tight truck all around, and much better than most of my previous 7.3s.

i got a parts truck out at the farm im heading to this weekend, going to pull the VCs, injectors,IPR, etc off it so i have some parts to swap out, that truck ran good before it was wrote off so i know the parts are good.

Thanks
Dustin
