I suspect my HPOP is dying. The truck fights me when starting on a grade (nose up) but starts nicely on flat ground or on a nose-down grade.
Anyone have any advice for me? Is there a test to confirm this?
Any advice would be appreciated!
Sounds like you have already confirmed it, by parking nose up and having difficulty starting it tells you the HPOP seals are failing and the confirmation is that parking nose down corrects the problem. The only other test would be to air test the HPO system and listen for air gurgling through the oil filter housing.
I can think of a couple things HPO leak related that would cause it to start nose down.....but none for fuel pump. Why would a fuel pump stop working when parked nose down or level?

Money,
Okay, okay...
I agree that fuel pressure is fuel pressure regardless of a slight angle. I just know the HPOP issues of 03-04's were pretty well resolved before his newer year.
I think we really need to see more diagnostics to truly guess. IPR%, ICP psi
ICP is Injector Control Pressure sensor.
IPR is Injector Pressure Regulator.
The fuel injectors use high pressure oil to do the work of squeezing the fuel through the injector nozzles. The pressure of this oil varies with rpm, engine load, throttle position and a few other things I'm forgetting. It varies between around 580psi at an idle to around 4,000psi at full throttle and high rpm. As you can guess that's a lot of pressure and the o-rings and pump can take a pretty good beating.
The trucks computer knows what the oil pressure to the injectors should be, it reads the ICP to see what the pressure is and opens/closes the IPR to get the proper pressure. So by watching how these two things are acting you can tell much about what's happening before ever putting a wrench to your truck.
I'll check and see if my ScanGuage II can deliver those reading, and report back.
And it may change your opinion, but my '05 is and early '05. So My engine is actually an '04 engine. The '05 changes didn't happen until mid year in '05.
***UPDATE***
The codes have been programmed in. I'll watch them tonight. Am I safe in assuming that the numbers you want reported back are during driving, not during ignition?

At idle, expect to see about IPR around 30%, ICP psi above 550.
Your ipr is a tick or two high but I dunno if it's definitive that it's your oil pump that is weak just from those numbers at idle. I guess you could monitor the actual, desired icp numbers and ipr % at a wot run. Has the stand pipes and dummy plugs been updated? These failing usually show as a hot no start opposed to a stubborn cold start but it may be a place to start. It also might not hurt to air test the system before ripping to far in and replacing good parts. It could very well be your oil pump since you mention your motor is a 04 build but I would do a few more tests.
I agree, not a problem so-far. Engine was warm? Can you check them again at 2,500rpm in park? Also verify ICP is near 0.0 and IPR near 14.8 with the key on and engine not running.
Yes, I took those reading after driving for about 10 minutes, then pulled over and let it idle.
I will get those reading for you; engine off and 2,500 rpm.
You guys mention hot starts and cold starts. I never paid attention before, but I think It starts better when cold. For instance, yesterday I stopped on the way home at the grocery store to get milk for the wife. I came out and it wouldn't turn over. Eventually it did; but it was a fight.
But this morning it fired up quite easily after sitting all night.
