2015-Multiple Camera Connections post info here!
My 2015 has a camera in the tailgate which is absolutely perfect for backing and hooking up to a tag trailer. However, it does no good at all when connecting to my fifth wheel Toy Hauler..
What would be really neat is if I could have a switch on my dash that would allow me to switch between a camera mounted under the cargo light and the tailgate camera.. Absolute nirvana would be the ability to have a third wired camera on the back of my 5th wheel so I could see what I was backing into (or over!)
......I would really rather not have multiple screens to look at and clutter up the cabin, so solutions need to be geared to using the factory display panel..
Any help from anyone who has been there and done that would be appreciated!
Lockpick
ford parts like the harness to connect a second camera to the existing harness
DC3Z-14A412-A
a cheap camera from ebay to mount under the lip of your bed pointing back...
disconnect tailgate camera and connect the 2nd camera whenever you want to hook up the 5er...
It did hook up to the 2015 wiring and could turn on the stock rear camera for use while towing. I didn't try nav inputs while in motion but no reason to assume that function will work as advertized.
I decided to return the unit and go with a modified stock Ford camera. I have made a mount for a camera and bezel that looks down on the 5th wheel. I took a factory tailgate wiring harness and added 10 feet of shielded 4 conductor #18 stepper motor wire between the two plugs.
Yes, it will mean laying under truck to connect and disconnect the camera harness but my labor is cheap.
These are the parts I used
Tailgate harness - FC3Z-14A442-A $11 + tax local Ford parts dept
Ford Camera - EC3Z-19G490-A $84 + shipping from Tasca Ford
FORD OEM Bezel - AL3Z-19H511-A $26 with free shipping on eBay
Ford Script - CL3Z-9942528-B $28 + shipping from Tasca Ford
^^^^^^^^^Above Not needed but can dress up the camera like tailgate
18/4 AWG 10FT Stranded Shielded Wire Cable - $8 free shipping
Camera wire colors
Red power wire of backup camera to violet/grey on harness
Ground power wire on camera to black/white on harness
yellow video wire on camera to white/green on harness
video ground wire on camera to brown/violet on harness
solid black wire on harness is not used.
Some scrap tubing to make mount and welding to fabricate it.
It would be nice to have some type of "Y" harness to hookup both cameras and use a relay to control which was displaying.
Larry - That looks like some GREAT information. I'm not married to the notion of having a switch inside the cab and can certainly crawl under my truck to change out the harness plugs when needed...
I am going to look more into what a FIM2 and Lockpick are however...
Thanks fellas... Keep the great info sharing coming!
I was wondering if this kind of knowledge would be found on camping blogs too.
