Expensive experiment.

Most lights using and LED source have to be redesigned around the new source.

I've tried a few cheaper H1 & H3 LED bulb replacements - complete waste of money/time.

3 big issues with those,

- they don't mention what reflector they are matched to,
- they have a cooling fan built in, they won't last long in the dust and sand, and
- due to the heat sink and fan they would require significant clearance behind the light.

Just on that, it won't match to a halogen or HID housing.

I've replaced the housings on my truck to accept HID's. I will fit an LED lightbar at some point to use either off-road or when traffic isn't around.

So the HID and LED housings are different?

Yeah, the way the "filament" spreads the light is very different, so the housing should be designed to support that type of globe.
If you care about reading more about it, this guy explains it better than I ever could:
Daniel Stern Lighting Consultancy and Supply

I've seen some neat "retrofit" jobs for HID's, where they cut out part of the existing housing and mount HID projectors in there, not 100% perfect, but a lot better solution: Pictures of HID Projector Retrofits - Patrol 4x4 - Nissan Patrol Forum

I know a similar thing exists for LED's, just I haven't seen one personally.

Thanks for the link , that describes the way my lights are now , So the HID globes can be bogus as well as the housings ?
Do you have a link to good housings ?, I changed mine years ago , got them from a supposed to be good Aus company , but after looking at that link there not so good.

Its just the HID globes by themselves that are crap.
If you either fit an entire housing assembly, or retrofit a HID housing into your existing headlight (ala that patrol forum link) you are good.

Here is a low cost assembly that should fit your truck:

Hi there.

I picked up two HID kits, an H1 55W 4300K kit to retro-fit into a pair of Cibie Oscar driving lamps, and an H3 55W 3000K kit to retro-fit into a pair of PIAA foggies - both these pairs of aux lights are bolted onto the front nudge bar and used to run halogen bulbs.

I am really pleased with the performance of the HIDs - converting the single filament halogen bulbs to HIDs has been a success. The only con that I have experienced is that the HIDs take about 3 seconds to achieve full brightness. So the first time I used them I was thinking, WTF they aren't working, and started playing with the switch to make sure they were on. Once I realised that there is a light up lead-time all was good.

My next project, when I get a job (currently unemployed), will be to go with aftermarket projector headlights - complete replacement units. These are fitted with a projector lens cutoff low beam and a driving light style high beam with seperate halogen bulbs for each - and the CCFL angle eye rings and LED parkers.

My lessons learned from the above HID kite exercise, and so far are:
1)adjustment to the halogen bulb mounts to fit the HID bulbs will be necessary;
2)delay in getting to full brightness means that I'll need the low beam HID to remain on when high beam is used;
3) I won't go higher than 5000k in low beam colour so the light won't look overtly HID;
4) I may keep the standard high beam halogen bulbs in place because of their quicker-than-HID light up response time;
5) LED bulbs into existing light housings are a waste of time - it is more economic to get a 30 degree light bar, i.e. a light unit designed for and around the LED, than to attempt to retrofit.
6) LED retrofit for dome-lights, instumentation lighting, CC buttons is possible and works - I've done that.

yes I've have dual light (HID's) globes in the aftermarket housings for a couple of years now and I'm sick of other people flashing me because I'm blinding them so after reading Adrian's post on housings I'm looking into other true HID's to fit .
Any options or links would be handy or if anyone has done the conversion.

It should, but don't quote me on that. You will need to clock the projectors to suit a bit to the left, and ensure that the right housing (in particular) is pointing sufficiently down when you align the lights after fitting them.

I'm probably going to experience the same problem, as I have the same style housings on my truck (from Recon), which I'll be back driving on the left side of the road with by the end of the year. The beam on mine is flat (which means it should work), without the old "step" in the beam on the passengers side halogen lights have

Maybe some of these Trucklite only in 7" round and 7"x5" rectangular.

I guess like all these lights eventually you will end up with them available to suit most vehicles.

For the last of the 7.3, this is what I planned to use as the starting point - they're available with RHD cut-offs. The seperate low projector and high reflector units would allow for HID conversion - or they can be ordered with single or pairs of HIDs fitted - remembering that if you go HID lows, you'd need to fit diodes to keep the lows lit while HB is on.
I beleive that these lights can be converted from halogen to HID successfully.
