I am currently looking at two different model years of the Ford Explorer.
I am interested in the 2001 Eddie Bauer V8 (5.0) AWD or the Limited Edition or the 2002 Eddie Bauer V8 (4.6) AWD or the Limited of that model year as well...
I see the 5.0 and the 4.6 are both V8's...I am wondering which one has more power (IE. Horsepower/Torque) and pulling capacities....
The 2002 which has been redesigned due in part to the rollovers, appears to be more bigger......and thats why I think the 4.6 is a bit under-powered for such a big vehicle...
Which year would be the best for a long term vehicle in terms of reliability, costs of repairs??
I don't know much about the 4.6, but the 5.0 has been around a long time, has a reputation as a strong, reliable engine, and has fairly strong aftermarket support. It seems to me that the 4.6 is a relatively new engine that hasn't been around for long enough to build up any kind of reputation.
don't get me wrong the 4.6 is a VERY GOOD moter i had one in my 98 expy an it's strong an has good power the only reson i said the 01 is it's cheaper,im not sure about the IRS
and thats why I think the 4.6 is a bit under-powered for such a big vehicle...
Actually, it's not. Beside being a great engine, it has more horsepower (239hp 4.6 vs. 215hp 5.0), about the same amount of torque (282lbft 4.6 vs. 288lbft 5.0) and a greater max. tow rating (7000lbs 4.6 vs. 6620 5.0).
The 02 is the same length as the 01, but a little wider. With the 02, you can opt for the third row if you want, or skip it and get additional cargo capacity over the 01.
IMHO, you should give both a good test drive and see which one suits you better. Good luck
