starter mesh problems
I have a 1993 f 350 with a 5 speed and a 460. when i got it a couple years ago the starter sounded bad, but it always started. i changed it out with a new gear reduction starter, it looked just like the old one. it sounds bad to, but i run it for about 6 mo. and it has now failed. looking at it its plain to see the drive gear is not meshing deep enough into the ring gear. it is engaging all the way inward, but just stripped the outside of the drive gear. i go get another starter and still have the same issue. i really need some help, thanks.

Inspect your flywheel real good. It may have a damaged spot on it that is killing your starter. Also, look at somebody elses flywheel teeth and compare that to yours. It may be severely worn or damaged and you don't realize it untill you compare it to a new one.
