rough idle

A friend gave me a 1988 f250 with a 460 efi and the idle is sometimes rough like it is missing then sometimes smooth and sometimes very high-any suggestions? Thanks.

How old are the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor?

Great place to start. High voltage items like plug wires do break down over time whether they are in use or not. Corrosion can also build up inside the the distributor cap due to moisture. A tuneup with good quality parts will cure a lot of sins from the past.

Also check out ALL the vacuum lines, including the little rubber boots. A vacuum leak can cause high idle.

Highly doubtful you will get an answer from the OP. Posted 3x in his thread from 2014 and hasn’t been back.

You should start your own thread describing the problem.

Thanks, I did but havent had much response https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ough-idle.html

Assume from searching this is a reoccuring problem for the 460 ?

I take delivery of the truck tonight or tomorrow morning, up to this point I have had limited access to it, the trucks brakes are shot - so I bought a new master cylinder and bleed screws (one is so choked up with gunk it wont bleed) so driving it properly has not been an option.

What i know is wrong with it from the listing description:
Leaking Transmission.

What i discovered is wrong:
Leaking Transmission
Rough Idle
Missfire
Motor mounts are worn out
Fuel Caps missing
Brakes failing

To get a title i need an emissions test certificate, and in its current state will fail.

What fun!
