we have a '97 expy, eddie bauer, 5.4, 4x4. closing in on 150k.
it runs and sounds great, except for during cold starts. there is a squeaking for about a minute, coming form the engine or something directly connected to it. it sounds like a constant, non fluctuating sound when first started in park, gradually morphing into a more pulsating sound, ecspecially after shifting into D. the speed of the fluctuations is tied to ythe enigne rpm. its sounds kinda like a rubbing chain, or squeaky belt, depending on the sitution. the damn dirty dealer wants to charge $ just to look at it, so i was wondering is anyone could give suggestions on how to find/fix this?
on a related note, could this be the timing chain? how long do these last? do they break often enough to warrant concern?
and whats the deal with people talking about ball joints? are those the squeaks that used to come form the suspention peices? ecspecially when turning? cause i fixed that. it was sooo easy....

Take a look at your idler and tension pulleys. The 5.4 L has 2 idler (fixed pulleys thst do not drive any accessory) and 1 tensioner pulley. These pulleys are supported by ball bearings, and will eventually wear out. My truck had some of the same symptoms, and when I pulled off the pulleys, there was a bunch of crap caked up inside it. I replaced the pulley, and presto - no more noise. Here is a way to check the pulley without removing it : When the engine is cold, take a can of WD-40, with the "straw" attached to the can, and spray the bearing of the pulley with a little lubricant. Start the motor, and listen for any difference in your noise. If there is no change, move on to the next pulley, and so on. Doing one at a time will allow you to find which one is giving you the trouble. The lubricant will temporarily quiet the squeak, until it burns off, so don't think its fixed. AVOID getting any lubricant on the drive belt and pulley surfaces, which will lead to slippage. Also, check the tension of the belt. The spring mechanism on the tesion pulley could be faulty, which will allow the belt to slip, and squeak. Use a 1/2" drive ratchet, it fits nicely into the tension pulley, and check the tension. Good Luck !
If the tesioner is bad, the belt is slipping. It has probably grlazed over by now, so replace it. You have to remove th belt anyway to get the tensioner out. so it won't be any more labor, and the cost is minimal.
ok, but if the belt is slipping, isnt that becuse its been stretched all this time? im pretty usre its the original belt. if its a stretched belt, shouldnt the tensioner be fine? how do i know?
i went to autozone, and they had the tensioner for like $50 and belt for $30, which seemed a little high. where should i get them?
The belt used on the Expy only "stretches" very slightly after a new install. The purpose of the automatice tensioner is to make up for it with the spring loaded pulley. any stretching of the belt would be minimal, and not enough for tensioner to compensate for. If your belt feels loose, butis not cracked or split, it would be a safe bet the tensioner is bad. Put a 1/2" ratchet on the tensioner, and see what kind of resistance you get. I had to use a 4' piece of copper pipe slipped over the ratchet to get enough leverage to release the tension. If you can easily release the tension without tools, the tensioner is bad. I would replace the belt regardless.........
