Unhappy Injector pump problems??

I am having problems with an erratic idle on a '92 7.3 with a manual tranny. The truck will start fine but it revs to 1500 RPM's then back to 1000 RPM's. I adjusted the pump and the idle is around 600-700 RPM's now. It will still fluxuate between 600 and 1000 RPM's though. I can tell when it is doing this even when driving it. There is a definite power difference. I have been told that the govenor sleeve is the problem. I am considering rebuilding the pump but without a diagram I do not want to attempt it. Can anyone help me out??

Injector pump problems??

Does it do this all the time or just during the first few minutes of run time. The reason I ask is that it could be fuel draining back from the pump cause by either a bad lift pump or air leak. The surging that your talking about sounds like a classic air leak in the fuel system. Typically this is coupled with white smoke at start up, and rough irratic idle, sometimes even hard starts depending on how bad the air leak is.

I will caution you on tearing into the injection pump. there are a lot of small parts and calibrated settings. I have been inside mine on different occasions replacing various items and this is not for the faint of heart. The deepest point inside the pump that a home mechanic really needs or should go is the delivery valve. More than that it's best left to the pros. A remanned pump on exchange will run you anywhere from 275-350 bucks depending on where you get your pump.

I gave a demo on tearing an injeciton pump down at the IDI Weekend over the 4th and the ringing responses I got back were, I'll never do that. This was from some pretty hard core home mechanics. Like I said this is not for the faint of heart.

It does it all the time. Once I get above 1500 RPM's I don't notice it. There is no white smoke at all.

I was worried about there being calibrated items in the pump. I will let the pro's handle the rebuilding if it is required.
