(well the 360's were) If you had been around in the late 60's to mid 70's, you'd have gotten spanked more than a few times by 390 powered pickups.

no I know a wee bit about the Fe in the mustangs and pretty well every other Ford product build in the 60s the Fe went into.. even the FTs in the medium duty trucks. I think I have driven 6 67-75 FE powered Ford trucks , 1 352 and 1 390 in the bunch. even have a set of cast iron 406 headers in my parts stash I got back in Carlisle 1984ish. you are right about the 360s, but 390s in the trucks were only slightly better unless major mods were done. changed a few factory 4 barrel intakes to aluminum and Edelbrock carbs on a few 390s in trucks.

we actually used 76 FE heads on our 68 Mercury when we built the original engine so we could get the hardened seats instead of having to cut out and press in inserts. used the 76 dist and spark box too, to make the ignition system slightly more reliable.

now the 427 cammer , that was the holy grail............................ we were trying to buy a basket case when we got the 68 back in 1985.

Not sure what you classify as major mods, but all it took was the basic stuff, cam intake and exhaust, and pistons if you wanted to go that far. I replaced the 410 I found in my 70 F100 (yea, that's right, a 410. Wasn't just the pistons there but the crank too) with a GT390 out of my 67 Stang. Had a friend with a 390 powered late 60's LWB F100 in high school too, backed by a toploader 4 speed. Never knew what was done to it, but it was anything but slow. Had lots of others that bought new 70's F's with 390's, no one ever considered them sluggish.

410 should have been put in the Fseries in the first place with the long stroke. they should not have discontinued that engine after 1 year of production. machine shop that rebuilt our 360 had a 410 in the rafters and offered it up for rebuilding instead of doing the 360, but at the time I was a bit of an FE newbie.

removing the stock exhaust manifolds was the big improvement , then opening up the ports in the heads to help them breathe.

I actually had very good luck with the 351M , but not in stock form! but when you build them up they can use as much fuel as a 460.

They did that in stock trim. We had a 77 highboy with one of those turds. 9 mpg, that was coasting downhill with a tailwind. In neutral !

Sorry but you are wrong there!

I owned a 81 E250 Clubwagon that had a 351M. It was completely stock with the original engine. From what I've seen the 351M's were used in some 79-81 vans. I've owned a 460 powered one too. Talk about a pain to work on!!

And you are missing a few engines from your list for the 75-91 vans. They also used the 351M, 460 and the 7.3L IDI diesels.
