I have had to repair threaded holes that have had helicoils in them. I always try to remove the old helicoil first. I have never removed on a head with a recessed plug before.
I usually take a sharp pick and try to get either the start or the end of the Helicoil to pry/bend out of the threads. Then I take a pair of needle nose pliers and pull it out.
So my nephew finally picked up a timesert kit, and I'm attempting to do this for him. It all seems pretty straight forward.
I'm working on plug 4 and can't see in the hole. He said it was helicoiled but I can't see in it.
I was advised by timesert persons to start with reamer tool, and then proceed.
I've got this reamer tool in my air ratchet, grease on the flutes, going slow revs and making very little progress.
I can't get good direct pressure on it, and I think that is hampering progress.
Any thoughts? Everytime I run the ratchet I pull it clean off the very small amount of shavings the go again.
I feel like I should have bottomed out by now, and be cutting threads.
