just put a detroit locker in it and be done. or a arb but i see no need to select the rear on and off. heck that truck in the pictures i ran (CUT UP FOR SCRAP NOW) i had welded the differential on it, worked good winter and summer, it never towed any heavy trailers though as you can see in the pics.
FWIW, when I got mine stuck in mushy grass, both wheels were happily digging trenches in the mud. Of course getting stuck had nothing to do with the highway tires I have on it.

I have been there with purely highway tires myself just pulling my travel trailer across a rain filled lawn. As much as I didn't want to do it, I have swapped out my Michelin highway treads (completely silent and smoooooth) back to an All Terrain tire now... I will just put up with the mild "buzz" the treads give me on the road for a little more piece of mind.
A LS isn't a locker, it needs torque to engage. Try standing on the brakes with a bit of throttle then let off the brakes and it will go. No torque no go.
Thanks for the reply Twigs!
As I mentioned above though, with one tire off the ground even a tiny bit, I couldn't get the other tire to hook up with the braking techniques.
Skip - just put a Detroit locker in it and be done
I want to SO badly... still looking for how much it will impact towing.

Reason: added lines
I was trying to drag a trailer out of the snow and ice last year and had to put it in 4 low and pour the coals on to get the diffs to lock up. This was after updating the fluid too. I just think the OEM setup is rather tame but it ended up working for me. I wont upgrade until I have to cuz $$$$$!

To get the LS to grab with a tire in the air is tough, stand on the brakes and mash the skinny pedal let off the brakes and it may or may not go. LS is Good for doing donuts and two wheel burnouts but off road it's not so good, I have one in my SD and don't really love it ether, towing is a big factor for me also and the LS doesn't really like towing 30,000#s all that much.

30K !!!! You, my friend, are in with the big boys club at that point. Even with your F350 I think I would be hard pressed to attach 30K behind me. That is like semi-tractor area. My hat's off to you.
No LS will power the tire on the ground. No way no how. Not even a true trac. Been there done that. If you want power to the tire one the ground, only way is with a locker.
My front true trac will power through, I had one tire off the ground and both fronts were spinning at the same time, while nothing is like a spool, I love my front true trac. Got me out of a lot of trouble, I had the true trac for a year before I put the rear locker in and I didn't know the difference with the weight of the engine, i would be willing to jack up one front tire, pull the rear drive shaft and know she will come off the jack.

The Bronco in this vid has a welded rear, and a true trac front. Notice the action of the front tires. This is why I'm not sold on the true trac no matter what anyone says..
Also on a side note, don't ever run a spool, mini spool, or welded rear on the pavement especially hauling wt, or pulling a trailer. I've broke more rear axle parts than you would think.

Lol thanks, it's definitely maxing out the gooseneck towing capabilities of my f350! It dose an amazing job, gives it a good workout but keeps up with traffic at 60mph just fine and the breaks are amazing, my Electric trailer brake controller quit and I didn't hardly know it! The LS hates turning under load so you half to put the hammer down at a stop sign then let off and coast around the corner then back into the power again.
