Just bought my first slick, a 65 cc, short, 352 w3-speed od. Needs a front clip because my uncle hit a deer with it about 6 years ago and smashed the grille and pass fender pretty badly, but my mine concern is the bed. All of the outer parts of the bed are perfect except for a small ding in the left die bed chrome, but the bed floor is rusted something bad! Needs the whole ribbed section of the floor replaced along with the front flat corner sections and some of the supports. Nobody lists anything for these models but was wondering if the bed sections for the 73 up could be made to work? Any help appreciated.
Nobody makes a reproduction of the 64-66 bed floor pattern. Later trucks are different and I'm not sure of the modification needed. If its been done, someone here on FTE can sure let you know how. Unfortunately, you're in Alabama I think. I have a long bed floor with only slight rust at the front that would make a great donor for a short bed, if you knew anyone traveling from California out your way!
You'd have to section in pieces. I believe the wheelbase changed on the later trucks, meaning the inner fenderwells are further back.
If the truck is that bad and needs a new front clip also, why worry about originality? Make the floor out of whatever you want: diamond plate, wood (GM did this in the same vintage Chevys), etc.
Bookmarked a link member posted of pix on repair of 'styleside' bed, unfortunately unable to locate similar thread where member used a plain sheet of 4x8 material rather than the diamond pattern. There's also a thread on member converting metal to wood bed. Anyhow, food for thought if other options don't work out??
Wanting to keep the truck looking original as possible on the outside, gonna sport a strong running gear for a sleeper look. Plus, diamond plate and plan sheet looks sh#$ ty! NPD offers the whole bottom section of the floor with the cross braces for the 73 up, looking like I will order it and cut to fit. Was just wondering if someone had already been this route and how it turned out.
a friend replaced his entire bed floor on his short wheel base 65 with one out of a newer LONG wheel base truck , he just trimmed off the front and rear as needed to line up the wheel wells . I think he may have had to redrill the mounting bolt locations as well and plug the old holes but for 300 bucks out of a wrecking yard and you have to look close to see its not original .
