I just bought a 1999 e350 7.3 diesel with a '2003' 7.3 diesel in it (seller has yet to provide paperwork ...) for a good price (maybe).
It runs well but failed smog cos the 'Service Engine Soon' light was on, and could not be re-set by the tech. The previous owner thinks the ecu is the problem.
I checked the ecu and its (still) a 1997-99 unit and I see that 2003 ecus are different part no.s but without a VIN for the '2003' engine I can't order the right ecu.
I have 2 questions:
1. Is it possible to look up a Ford VIN from an engine no. (74JU2U849243). My local Ford dealer could not.
2. If all I can do is narrow it down to a 2003 engine, how do I go about getting an ecu, and re-flash to what settings?
No ..International makes the engine.......You might be able to find out from International but I doubt it .....Ask another Ford Dealer OR find a 2003 Van with a PSD and use that VIN....
The PCM codes are here .......http://www.thedieselstop.com/faq/949.../pcmcodes.php3.You will need a PCM in the same "Family " as your engine The " family" Numbers are the ones in the column that says MODEL-TYPE...then it will work...For re-flashing you can contact Jody at http://www.dp-tuner.com/ ...........he can do it ....On Edit, it looks like the Model Type you want is DPC-455....
When I look up DPC-455 I found a chart showing 5 Control Unit part no.s for the 2003 ( Ford firmware update database ) - how does that play into how I get it flashed?
Yes ...After 1997 All vans went to the AB Injector which is Cali ( read Split Shot ) Since Vans DO NOT have Intercoolers they remained the same .........In my opinion, You do not need to get it flashed....Just put it in..... unless you have stage 1 Injectors ( Single Shot ) ....You should have Split Shot Injectors...Unless you are putting Stage 1 Single Shot ones OR Hybrids in you do not need further Tuning unless it shifts Funny...Email Jody and see what he says...
