I have a 94 Ranger, with a 4.0L v-6
Question is it will not start it turns over just fine, At first I checked the fuel filter and pump it is working properly and it is getting fuel.
Then I checked for a spark and it isn't getting one, I tested the Iginition coil and it showed to be faulty, replaced it, but still will not start, I don't know how to test the iginition coil module, or Crankshaft position sensor cause it won't start.
So has this happened to anyone else and if so maybe can point me in the right direction?
Thanks
At the risk of sounding really stupid, I'm assumming your engine has a distributor (I don't know what years they got completely away from distributors). If your original spark coil was faulty in the PRIMARY circuit (DC resistance too low), it would have been pulling too much current through the module, over-heating it, and possibly causing it to fail. It's not too unusual for the module to fail. If the codes do tell you that the module is bad, the auto parts store can test it for you (after you pull it), and indeed verify that it is dead. How comfortable do you feel taking your distributor apart?? IF you have to replace the module, I would suggest also replacing the stator (pick-up coil). But it's a pain, unless you've done it once before.
Thanks Ken,
Well The Codes that come up are PO133, and PO231, both are dealing with the fuel system, no codes dealing with the Ignition
or coil , Fuel pump and filters are fine, so are the injectors.
That part is functioning fine it just isn't getting a spark, there is only three possibilties left. The ICM, PCM, CKP, I guess it will be left to process of elimination.
Amp, mine is a Distributorless ignition system, thanks for the reply though.
Hi blackeagle,
Is your truck a 94 or 95?
The codes you gave are EEC-V codes which should have started in 1995. If it's a 1995 it shouldn't have an ICM. The ignition control is built into the PCM.
Usually a bad CKP will make the check engine light flash while cranking so that might be something to watch.
Hello Racerguy
Mine is a 94,
And those are the codes I got.
The PO133 is a Fuel Control system Fault
The PO231 is a Fuel Pump Relay and system Fault
My ICM is seperate from the PCM
The only reason I could get those codes from my 94 is that someone before me changed the PCM if there interchangable that is ?, or I read it wrong, I'll have to go do it all over again.
That is going to be puzzling.
Well the check engine light never flashed on me so maybe the CKP isn't faulty.
Thanks
Thanks anyway.
No the PCM's wouldnt be interchangeable between EEC IV and EEC V. I wonder if it is a California truck or something? The test connector for your scan tool is under the dash? Or under the hood? The manuals dont show a 94 with EEC V. I'm not sure what you've got there. Oh well.
If it has an ICM that is the first thing I would try. They have been known to fail. All the tests for the igntion system require a breakout box so unless you can borrow one from a dealer which isnt likely you'll probably just have to try new parts
Ok Changed the ICM, now it tries to run, but Backfires now and the codes I'm getting is 51,112, that refer to the IAT sensor, 111 for the System pass, 13, RPM unable to reach lower test limit.
Evidently everytime I replace something it either causes another item to go faulty or it was more than one thing out at one time.
Ok now you're getting EEC IV codes. I think someone isnt reading the codes right
Backfiring sounds like the timing is out for some reason. Has anyone switched any plug wires around? Changed wires or something?
No the wires are fine, firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6, and the wires on the coil are as follows from front of engine, left side 1,2,3, right side, 6,5,4, I know it sounds strange to be the timing cause it was running fine, then it cut out several times but kept running,
If timing slipped wouldn't it have stopped running all together or ran rough and missed real bad not cut out and keep running fine?
