I have been struggling with the truck (83 F350 6.9 IDI) dying on and off for a month. I have changed lines, the fuel filter, tightened up everything although I do need an o-ring on one of the injectors, but that didn't prevent it from running well for 2000 miles and is just barely damp not wet. It hasn't been getting fuel and now it appears it's not getting any -my friend whose good with diesel tractors told me it's the pump.
I am now going to install a new lift pump. I am worried about the cam position being right. Can anyone advise?
Thank you in advance.
Just to verify, have you disconnected the line on the fuel filter coming from the pump and cranked the engine to see if fuel is coming out?
If fuel is not coming out, its probably the lift pump, if there is fuel, it could be the injection pump...
With the 3 lift pumps I have changed, I have not run into the issue of the wrong position... Each installation was just fine. I do recommend removing the vac pump and such though, otherwise its much harder to install.
if the fuel pump is working, next would be to reconnect the fuel line to the filter, use a 5/8" wrench, loosen the inection lines on top the injectors and crank the engine with accelerator down...
If no fuel comes from the cracked lines, you need a rebuilt injection pump. They are not to hard to install much easier on a truck than a van but still fairly easy.
I will do as you say-I hope not because I just replaced the injection pump with a new Stanadyne one two years ago but with my luck you never know. Since my truck is stranded 30 miles away and I can't get there today I will be gone from the forum until I have tried these things.Again thank you. Joe
