on my signature rig I am toying with the idea of cutting the exhaust off in front of the cats, behind the last o2 sensor under the extended cab and adding enough straight pipe to bring the exhaust at a 40* in front of the back tire.
Do I need to worry about having BACK PRESURE for the truck to run properly.
Is it going to be so load I can't stand it?
I've read on FTE bout Cherry bombs being very popular should I look into it?
Any thoughts, experiences, sound clips, videos, advice would be great!
That's a great article! Thank you for the link!! I never understood the science (can I call it that?) going on behind how an exhaust system affects engine performance, but this helps make it a little more understandable.
I too found the artical very informative. Thank you
So straight piping is in, but what about the noise lvl? Will it sound throaty and healthy, or like a truck that has lost it's muffler?
It will sound like a pissed off v8 tractor, least thats the way I heard it back with my truck but I personally loved the sound allot but had to quiet the girl down to please the family. But if you don't live in a town or city or don't care about who hears you when you fire it up or drive around then I say go for it. And if its to loud then a set of glasspacks of decent length will sound good to and be a whole lot quieter.
It won't sound like a tractor w/ a big block in it. Open her up and let's hear that puppy. I'm partial to Thrush. Get a long one and put it under the truck if you are worried about it being too loud. I have the 2nd cat gone and a 23" Thrush in place of the original muffler and you can hear it but it's not at all loud. With no muffler at all it will be loud
Oh I didn't read the guys signature before posting, I assumed we were dealing with a small block but in this case being a big block it will be loud but it will sound like a beast.
I'm always in for some good exhaust threads. It's weird, what I thought my truck would sound like after listening to tons of exhaust clips, it does not sound like that at all. It kind of has it's own unique sound I guess. I don't know if it's the Thrush vs Cherry Bomb sound or what or the length etc. What did you do to quiet yours down Shadow? The best 302s I've heard have duel cherry bombs w the 2nd cat cut out or simply no muffler at all

Well I got me a set of headers for Christmas last year and two purple hornie glasspacks and that made her quieter than before when she was straight piped with good old manifolds, and I tell you what I was one loud Sob for a while and everyone knew when I was around. I couldn't sneak up on a deaf man if I tried. but now I can sneak up on him and then scare him with a lead foot if I'm timing things right. Sorry for the late reply/ sounding like I'm not very bright, being tired and typing is not a good combo for me. One thing i hate about glasspacks though is that for me at least, they drone a little more than I like at certain rpms and just keep doing that and it annoys me greatly, if I was straight piped I wouldn't care just crank up the radio louder and keep going but since I have them I'd rather have them do their job and keep me halfway sane on a long trip, and a long trip for me is anywhere past 40 miles round trip.
I'm about to put headers and a new exhaust on my 92 f-250, 460. I am gonna get a set of shortys or maybe mids with a y pipe. I was planning on running a 3" pipe to either a magnaflow or flowmaster 70 single in single out, then turn it down before the rear axle. I am wanting to increase low end power, would I be better to run the exhaust all the way to the back?
Yeah, it will be plenty loud w those headers. You don't want it droning in the cabin
EDIT: I don't know about all the way back to the bumper b/c if you have a spare under the truck you won't be able to run duals. I like the one over the tire and out the back but out to the side before the tire would be ok too but would be louder IMO. Headers+no cats=pretty loud no matter what muffler
IMO running open exhaust is a badidea for several reasons. You can be ticketed. You are being obnoxios. When a cop pulls you over for that they will look for ptherthings to write you up for. People dont want to hear your "awesome sounding" truck any more than they want to hear your music rattling the mirrors off your lowrider sitting at the stoplight.
