anyone have any experience on the front differential for a 1987 ranger ? i need to know how the spacer located behind the outer pinion bearing turns(it is smaller on one end) my manuals dont show . please reply, i need to get this going to drive for work tomorrow.
It sounds like the crush spacer to set your pinion pre-load,it can be installed either way. I HAVE A FORD MANUAL for the 87. I can check it out if you think it is another part.
yes thats it, i put the bigger end to the inside. i noticed when installing it, the bigger end rests against the inner pinion bearing and the smaller end didnt go flush against it ( only so far down the pinion shaft ) please chk. the manual and lmk. thanks
yes, i got it right looks like. wanted to be sure before i went farther. one more question - i have owned several rangers and bronco 2's and all have had problems with the front -ends getting water in the front differentials, due to deep water holes and so on i suppose(strip mine use) as theres no way to drain the housings except to suction it dry. i was wandering if a small hole can be drilled in the bottom of the housing and installing a flat plug to have easy and complete drainage ? or would this weaken the cast aluminum too much ???
Water is not common in front or rear axles.Have you checked your breather hoses. This could be the problem. Yes you can install a drain. Pick a thick part of the axle at the lowest part.
Run a new breather hose from the diff(s) up into the engine compartment and put on a cheapy gas filter to keep anything from crawling down in there and that will help with the water issue.
