e99 coolant questions

I know the Gooch thread tells alot about the coolant but one thing i cannot find is what all would be needed to be done to a 99 that is all intensive purposes a late 99 on the engine but the serial number comes in less than the International documentation say to convert it to the ELC stuff, I can get CAT EC1 super cheap and am already in the process of changing out the waterpump, hoses etc. i know the injector cup loctite can be eaten away at that, but i plan on changing out the injectors here in a few months(possibly a year or less).

Are there other things that i would have to change out to run the newer ELC CAT EC1?

i have read some people have been just fine with the ELC swap and others there injector cups start leaking.

I think you answered your own question. Most injector cup replacement. Some have been fine. It's not like it will happen over night. If you plan on changing them then do it all then. Lots have run the cat elc with know problems. I still run the green stuff, but if I were to change the cups I would go ELC. Mine is a 8/99 build. All else is late 99.

bonanza,

thanks for the response. I just mainly wanted to make sure there was nothing else i had to change out were i to swap to the ELC.

so no other failures have been attributed to swapping the ELC?

The Rubber Seals (gaskets and O-rings) throughout the cooling system were changed in model year 99.5. There is an engine number which represents the change date where ELC can be used without concern. Engine Numbers prior to that manufacturing date should not run ELC as may degrade the seals.

I will see if I can locate the information and post it.

White,

i know the serial number(looked it up last night) mine falls less than that serial number so its the seals i am concerned about.

what i fail to see is what other seals? waterpump and the rest of the coolant system is all pipe threads with pipe dope what other seals and o-rings are there besides that of the injector cups

Chet you just said what I was thinking! I too have no plans to switch over to ELC until I have changed the injector cups.

Malodin you did a great job researching the subject and I would suggest using Motorcraft VC-9 when flushing. Some do and others say you don't need to. But after reading up on the VC-9 it sounds like it does a great job cleaning the block & heads. I don't remember what it said to use in Gooch's Flush thread.

well i am getting 5 gallons ofCAT EC1 ELC for free brand new, and 4 Gallons of CAT DEAC for sub $15(alot less) so i will run the DEAC this go around that should give me time to get the injectors and cups done. the water pump is all new so i should have to worry about those o-rings/seals i just fail to see what other seals.

oh by the way my Green coolant in the truck with the test was a little on the low side but adequate and in very good shape/color when drained

so got it all back together this weekend and have been driving it to work and back 100 miles a day since yesterday so far so good, picked up 1.5mpg so far and looks like it still is climbing. very happy with all the maintenance done to it, most of it was all stuff that needed to be done so i didnt spend a whole lot of money on non needed components going to be driving to california on monday, so going to drive it the rest of this week to work to make sure its ready for the trip to cali.
