Hello, I have some symptoms that I need help with. My X has a binding feeling when I turn. Stronger to left than the right. Stronger when pulling a trailer. Weaker to none on wet roads.
Four wheel drive is not on. I replaced the rear gear oil with Royal Purple synthetic about 15,000-20,000 miles ago. New u joints for the rear drive shaft.
My guess is still the rear end, but I am not sure what to look for or how to check.
Ok. You are sure that you dont ride in 4wd? Check it.....and not only at the
**** inside. Maybe you get fooled by an electric bug or disortioned lever.
Second point is the front lock hubs. Are they on LOCKED or AUTO?
Maybe you have one freezed or a vacuum leak.
Third one and my favourite one: Your limited slip in the rear pumpkin is shot
and this thing cant unlock anymore due a broken spring or something similar.
Easy to check.
Jack the whole rearend up that the rear wheels could spin free. (Jackstands on each side) than turn just one wheel with your hand. If the other wheel spin in the same direction...well....than you're busted. There is your binding.
German Mike any locker or posi will spin both tires in the same direction, could very well be something in the limited slip gave way, but no matter what any locking device will cause both tires to spin in the same direction. Doesnt mean its broken. I have a feeling he's has to pull the rearend cover and inspect the diff. that is true, something is binding, front or rear cause it doesn't do it when it's wet out.

Youre right.....BUT only if the locker/posi is locked. It shouldnt be locked while its jacked up without any power applied. If there are no heavy differences between those wheels it has to unlock automatically itself.
And this seems to be out of function.
Actually if its jacked up freely and you turn one wheel clockwise the other side should turn counterclockwise and surely NOT in the same direction.
Second is that its way harder to feel if its locked if youre driving on slippery ground, whether its wet, snow, mud or ice, because the difference of the curve inner wheel can be easily equalized by a slightly tire slip. You may wont feel anything until you reach dry pavement where the wheels has a lot more grip.
Sorry David and dont feel offended
Heres a good homework......for all who dont know exacttly what happened in a diff.
.....and there is another option.
You wrote that you changed your diff oil....but didnt say anything of a frictioner?
Did you use something like this?
Maybe thats the problem.
I am going to stick to my guns, thats how we tell if it is an open diff or has a posi, put the car or truck on the lift and spin one tire. If the other tire spins backwards its open, if they spin in the same direction it's a posi. If what your saying is the case if both wheels come off the ground as in serious rock climbing you lose your posi. I've never seen it, I have seen gm gov-locks that do that and ive had worn out clutches in the diff but when I lift my truck both tires spin the same direction. If you have a spool in your carrier wont both tires spin the same way?
Thanks for the replies. As for the front hubs being locked, no the front axles spin freely while parked. I am not 100% to check if the 4x4 is not engaged. Dial is 2wd, no light is on. When I rotate ****, light comes on.
As for the rear end I just jacked up the Ex. When I turned the rear whees forward both wheels turn in same direction at same speed. Both forward and reverse. When I did the rear end gear oil change, I spend countless hours reading and I verified on FTE that I would not need a friction additive with the gear oil I was using.
During the firestone recall, my mylar label was pulled so I am not sure what type of rear end I have.
Ok so far.
Let us concentrate to the rear end. Both wheels in the same diretion,hm?
What happen if someone try to hold one wheel during the other tries to
turn it.
If its possible to hold one with ease, everything is fine and you have another problem, but if its not possible to keep one wheel stopped than your Limited/locker/posi is locked at all times and that shouldnt be.
And I bet it is.
David? Your opinion? I say its shot. A SixPack?
Well it might be something that was real simple. I got a chance to do some more research and I found some posts on other Ford sites that many people have had to use a friction modifier with Royal Purple gear oil. Actually found a ton of threads slamming Royal Purple.
Yesterday, I got a day off and I jacked up the rear end again. Again, I was able to turn one wheel the other wheel turned in the same direction. I was able to to hold one wheel while the other was turning, but it was tight.
I went ahead and bought some modifier, thinking it was worth a shot before I emptied the rear end again.
Today I got a chance to drive it. The shudder was the rear end and it was way less, maybe completely gone. I want to drive it a little more and make sure because I don't want to put too much of the modifier in.
I hope this was it, and I thank you guys for pointing me in the right directions.
Glad to hear that it was "just" the missing frictioner.
Ok, I loose the 6 pack but I was very close with my blind shot
diagnosys from 5000mls away, wasnt I?
Thank you for sharing.
