I tore out the rear end in my '89 F150 and the speedo quit working. I rebuilt it and the speedo still isn't working...anyone know what the problem could be? I cleaned off the magnet at the top of the rear end and it still isn't working. Any thoughts?
An 89 has a mechanical speedometer, the VSS on the axle is only for the ABS system. Check the cable, it might have failed, or improperly engaged properly in the speedometer or gear in the transmission, or perhaps the gear itself may have failed.

find the spec for the ohm reading across the sensor, check with an ohmmeter at the harness. If the meter replies over limit or nothing at all, there is an open somewhere in the circuit. If the ohmmeter replies 0 ohms, there is a dead short. If you obtain a decent reading, shake the cable to see if it is broken inside. If this checks out, move to the next harness point and repeat process.

If the cable is worn, it has probably put so much stress on the plastic gears in the transmission tailhousing that one or both are stripped. That's what happened to mine, and it's why I converted to the electronic speedo (PSOM) that has already been referenced. It takes some effort, but I think it was well worth it. The gears are ~$8ea and the cable is ~$40.
