Any body fixed surface rust before? Ive got a pretty good rattle can paint job and ive painted snowmobile hoods and stuff like that before but never fixed any rust on a truck. The spots are about the size of a quarter and one is about 2'' by 2'' under my door handle. The biggest thing im scared of is the paint not matching. I have the cardinal red 2000 superduty and ive found that dupli color makes it in the perfect match line but does this stuff actually match that good? I dont think my paint has faded to much but who knows since if it did it faded all at once and i wont see the difference.
Red fades like crazy. I had a laser red (pre cardinal iirc) mustang that when doing a touch up needed some substantial lightening to match. You could give it a go yourself. I'd probably hit it once myself, then let the pro fix my mistakes.
if you see rust thru your paint doubt that its surface rust...probally have a pool of water in your doors and its rusting thru.
the rust that i have is where a rock chipped the paint then the pain peeled then it rusted. I can tell the spots like my cab corners that are more substantial but the rust by my door handles or on my hood are rock chips.
You can spray it on a practice panel and hold it up to your truck and compare or spray it on your truck on the inside of the bed where the sun hits it but others cant see and that should tell you if it will match.
If you go to a paint shop they can mix you a spray can and cut it with thinner. That help it melt into the surrounding paint so it blends better. Don't tape a straight edge either. Fold the tape/paper so it is curved with the sticky side facing what you are painting. That gives a more natural look with no visible edges.

With older paints that worked ok. With base/clear uou are going to see a patch job no matter what. To blend in you have to sand the area with 2000 the. Feather out with 3000 put down base then clear and wet buff it out and you will probably still see it esp being red. It's really hard to spot repair base/clear and not see it.
You might be able to do a "40 FOOTER"...meaning it looks from from 40 feet, but i doubt youll be able to make it look perfect. My suggestion...look for a whole new door, i bet you could find one for a decent price in the same color as your truck. I find that once rust starts is cancer, you can sand it and cover it up but it ussually always comes back, expecially on a new england vehicle
