Thumbs down Smoking and bouncing front end

Hello guys. New member from Oregon. My truck is a 1998 F-150 4X4 set up for towing etc.

I am looking for help on a problem. The left front started smoking and the front end just started bouncing around very badly. Of course I pulled off and let it cool down. My question is this; I've pulled the hub and the bearings seem smooth although maybe a bit tight. I've checked the caliper and it seems to be working properly. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Did I mention....I love my truck!

IF the bearing is "tight" it has run out of grease and binding.

Thanks for you response. Normally I would agree but this bearing feels absolutely smooth and is not noisy. By a bit tight I mean it doesn't free wheel. To me a bearing that is out of grease and worn would free wheel noisily instead of being a bit tight and quiet.

I think I'm leaning a bit towards the caliper because when I removed it to enable me to remove the hub, I had to pound it off the rotor and I know that can't be good.

Change the caliper AND the rubber brake hose. The internal part of the hose collapses and will not allow fluid to return. It also cooks the caliper inside by the way you described it.

I always replace calipers in pairs. 2 front, or 2 rear. Never just one per axle. If you do there is a possibilty the car can pull while braking. When the rear ones go bad, they are usually in such bad shape both need replaced.

Thanks fordiesel69. I actually changed the caliper today. Took it around the block a couple times to get it warmed up. Everything seemed ok so took it out on the hiway for about 3 miles each way and when I got home there was no smoke and it didn't smell hot. Thanks for your tip!
