I put a new power stearing pump on my truck about 2 months ago, (When I first got the truck) Then one day i poped the hood to show someone the engine and noticed the cap to the pump missing I figured i forgot to put it on and lost it. Then not to long after I was looking under the hood again and the cap was sitting on the well. Figured maybe I left it there. Now its gone again, just disapeared and when I start the truck it sound like the fluid in the pump is boiling. Can anyone tell me whats could cause this? Im thinking there is preasure building up and the cap is being pushed off?
The pump is only a couple months old, It might be water it has rained alot and Im not sure how long its been off. Overfilling can make it boil? How do I get the water out?
Flush the system at the very least. If the top was off and water got in, dirt also got in. A new pump won't cure the problems. Your system is trashed and you will need new parts ALL the way thru. Dirt, water, and hydraulic systems don't mix.
My pump was doing the same thing. Also the power assist was working intermittintly. I got a new pump for it and after installing it Im having the same problem with a new pump. The cap popped off and the fluid boiled inside the pump. I am going to take the lines off agian and try flushing it. Hopefully it will work. I wish I hadnt bought a new pump.
Ok so I took a compressor and blew the system out. Air goes thru the Steering box but no power steering, and the fluid is still boiling when I run the truck.
have you guy's tried to bleed the system? i am not saying this will solve your problem but it might do some good. when you say it is boiling over i assume you mean it is just aerating the fluid a lot? or are you telling us it is getting very hot and boiling over?
I say boiling but Im sure its just bubbling alot. I replaced my cap and havent lost it in a couple of weeks but about 50% of the time have to use alot of muscle to steer. Im gettng a 2 1/2" lift kit hopefully in a couple of weeks and Im going to replace the stablizer, shocks, and coils on the front and when I do that Im going to try and bleed the power steering also. Im hopeing that will fix my problem.
Sometimes it feels like its catching, kind of like a stop go stop go action. Its hard to explain. When Im backing out of my driveway it take everything I have to not hit to guy parked across the street. Then there are times when Its just backs out with ease.
yes more than likely it is air bound, try crackin your pressure hose a pinch and turn the wheel back and forth 2 or 3 times lock to lock with the truck running, tighten back up and do the same on the return side. i am sure you will see a difference once the air is out of the system. the reason you were blowing off the p.s. cap is because you were building up pressure in the very small area between the top of fluid and the bottom of the cap, pressure has to go somewhere and off goes the cap
Thanks for the help. Hopefully when good Ol' GW Bush sends me the check he promises I can get what I want. Im going to a friends next weekend and were going to try and do what you suggest.
