When I have spare time and a sawzall, bad stuff starts happening. I recently cut off my muffler on my 95 F150 4x4, replaced it with piping, and the 5.8 sounds very nice. I just bought three short sections of 2 1/4 ID pipe from autozone (about 4'), some clamps, and an adaptor for 2 1/4 ID to 2 1/2 ID because the pipe gets bigger behind the muffler. Splice that puppy in there and after about 20 minutes and $20 you can kid yourself into thinking that you bought an exhaust system, very handy if your wife is good at coming up with better uses for your money. The sound is nice and mellow, definitely louder but not real excessive, and when you get on it and then back off in a hurry it will talk you just a little bit. The two cats appearently do a pretty good job as mufflers, and the stock 3" diameter tip makes for a nice tone. If you just chop off the muffler and don't put in the pipe, it's pretty loud in the cab and a little more raw sounding, as the exhaust is coming out right under the cab, I guess I'm a little more civilized than I was in high school. Seat of the pants says it's faster, but I'm not kidding myself, throttle response is a little better now, but no real mpg increase. Still, it sounds better, which is all this cheap *** was looking for. Soak everything you put on with WD40, it will make life easier if you want to take the stuff off later.
