I am driving myself crazy!!! ECT VS EOT...again

Cold soak over night-my EOT VS ECT is 5* different

On my 15 mile commute to work all highway my ECT temp is 190* and that stays there my EOT temp will go to 195-198 depending how heavy I am on the throttle-All flat ground 65-70MPH

Am I driving myself nuts over here?

Could my oil temp sensor bad-which would make my cold soak temps have a 5* spread right from the start?

As long as you are in these ranges and maintaining a 15 delta you should be good. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I would suspect the ECT sensor. Staying rock steady doesn't sound normal to me. I don't think they are terribly expensive or hard to change (as long as you go easy on the install torque). Or you could swap them and get an idea, they're the same p/n.

Really? So the coolant temp and oil temp sensors are the same?

Just swapped mine to check for sensor discrepancy after cold soak. Not too bad but I broke a sensor on reinstall. I would advise hand tighten only, 13/16th deep socket should fit.

Oreillys had the replacement sensor, bwd brand for $27. Original part is manufactured by Siemens and it was ~$50 online.

You are over thinking this thing. Number one you'r inside the parameters and number two you'r just barely into the heat soak parameters. Takes mine app. 20 miles at highway speeds. Your cold soak temps could be a degree or two closer but take that into consideration on your spread temps. Some here go with 12 to 13 degree spreads and they never get worse.

Yeah, I guess I am over thinking things.

I am headed up to VT tomorrow which is a 4HR drive towing ATVs for 5 different people so I would hate to ruin everyone's weekend by not making it there. I guess I'm hella paranoid from my old truck. Knock on wood this truck has been 100x better.

I won't have service until Monday night so I'll keep you guys posted after I get back and let you know how it goes.

I took the tune out of the truck and put in the 50hp tow tune.

Tyler your last truck was Cursed LOL

Use TFT ECT EOT IAT#1&2 compare all they should be close if the cold soak is 12+hours that may help determine what sensor needs changed

ECT should vary to some degree rock solid sounds fishy to me as well

It takes more than 8-10 hours for the fluid temps to bottom out, depending upon how hot they were when you got home, how much wind there is, how hot it was overnight, etc, etc.

which was 5* hotter??

... they do vary during the day/night I suspect the ECT sensor is in contact with the coolant so the heat would migrate UP - to the ECT, but I suspect the oil drains back to the pan and potentially leaves the EOT sensor measuring the air, housing temp, or oil trapped touching the sensor, while the oil in the pan gets hotter from the heat coming off the pavement - if in the sun in the early am.

Compare them to your trans temp, depending upon your outdoor temp and how long it actually sat, and what time of day you go back out - 5* could be just fine. I had a couple days last week where at 6PM after sitting in the office parking lot, by ECT/EOT where both 109, TFT was 105. It was 102 on the EXT TEMP sensor on my EATC display. It was HOT here last week.

Even sitting all weekend long, the individual sensors will vary as the day warms up or the night cools off.

IF you really really really want to know... take BOTH sensors out. Sit them in the sun and measure the resistance of each with a digital volt meter over the course of a few minutes/hours. With them both getting the same amount of sun you should expect their resistance values to be very close together as they heat up from the sun..

Alright, just updating as I got back from my trip a little while ago.

Everything went perfectly and I was very impressed with how well the truck pulled everything up there.

Going up I mainly saw coolant temps at 190 and oil temp was 210 on average.

Coming home driving a little faster and it was much warmer out-I saw my oil temp rise to 234* and my ect went to 210* fan never came on as my ECT never got that high.

Unhooked the trailer and unloaded everything temps went right down to the normal 190ECT-EOT 198-200*

So, I guess I have nothing to worry about, the truck proved itself to me with this trip. I was a little worried with the bad juju with my old 6.0 and this truck having almost 260k miles on it, everything seems to be A-OK!

Thanks guys
