I've used the cup brush on the tins as well, just use a softer brush, not one of the ones with the twisted bristles. I generally lay them upside down on the bench and run a screw through a couple of the holes to hold them still so they aren't skittering about as I am cleaning them. A variable speed grinder makes that a lot easier too.
