I have had both, traded my 4.2 XL auto, 3:55 in on my 03 5.4 Lariat. Major difference in power! In my opinion you would have to do some big time work on the engine and gears. Anything is possible!!
I have an '03 4.2 - Put a flowmaster exhaust on and an air intake kit. That will give your 4.2 plenty enough power to beat a chevy 4.8. I left a 4.8 in the dust with my 4.2 with only a K&N filter! I do have a 5 speed tranny, but everything else is stock.
See, Chevrolets (especially new V8 models) get power in low end because the RPM range isn't very high. Well the Fords (96 and up) redline at like 5 1/2 RPM's. You beat them in the late gears. With those 2 mods, you'll be surprised at the difference in speed.
I have a 1997 Ford F-150 XLT. I have a K&N air filter, flowmaster 1 in 2 out and dumped before my rear axel, but if you want to smoke so chevys and especially dodges with I hate with a passion, get a Dialbo Delta Sportchip. For the v6 you get 19 horsepower and 23 ftlbs of torque. It also adjust your gear to fuel ration and increase your rpm limiter. If you ask for the speed limiter to be raised they can do that as well. The best programmer I have found is at motorhaven.com. Ken is a great guy in responding to your queries. I have a Stage 2 chip which cost $238.50 and was worth every penny. Im smoking v8's left and right and most people don't expect it. Get one! If you have any questions ask me.
Alright, go to motorhaven.com once at this page click on Diablo Sport performance chips. When that's done it will take you to where the chips are and scroll down to about a quarter way there it will say Performance gains in bold letters and there is a list of ford trucks to look at. Scroll down to where it has 4.2 liter: up to 19hp and 28 ft-lbs. If you go down more there will be a list of all the products, choose which one is right for you.
*IMPORTANT
Read everything available to you and ask plenty of questions to ensure that everything goes right, for example you need to be running on 93 octane and if your state dosen't have 93 octane then you might develop pinging in your gas tank.
Have fun, if you need anymore help then write back.
Also, if you have flowmaster 40 series like I do, get rid of it. For some reason only know to the 4.2's there is alot of back pressure and when I got my chip programmed I put it in and when I am in overdrive I hit about 4 to 4 1/2 rpm's, but when out of overdrive I hit 5 to 5 1/2 and the backpressure is rediculous. The first chance I get, im taking those damn things off and getting MAC's to match my intake.

That pinging doesn't come from your gas tank, it's from your engine -- the technical term is detonation. VERY quick way to kill an engine. Sounds like these chips add horsepower by advancing the timing. Can anyone confirm?
i own a 03/F150 XL ,flareside, black ,manual transmission.K&N filters and custom air scoop mounted on air duct in front bumper.
Custom air scoop:dropped a 5 foot "pool & spa" hose in the filter boremove filters first ofcourse)-spray hose w/ wd40 to make it easy to thread. At the other end(bumper side) attached a 3" pvc(black)cuplink w/ adaptor to fit hose.glue hose to cuplink and screw now "air scoop" inside air duct.I have 4 air scoops 3 goes anywhere in engine
