I have a '40, but the engine's bell housing date code is 11/1943 ('K 15 3'), the heads are 59AB, and the distributor is the diver's helmet style (correct for '41 & earlier). Sounds like a 'back-inna-day' rebuild using a number of parts, IMO. Without looking at casting numbers, one would think it's been in there since Day 1, but 70-some years can disguise a lot.
I read that FoMoCo started production of engines for civilian replacement in late '44, what would be the theory behind a late '43 block; military usage only, correct? Anything else noteworthy on these?
I don't think the bell housing numbers are a date code. Your engine was definitely assembled from different years since 59 head were never factory installed with the "diver's helmet" distributor. For specific identification of your flathead block please read a thread we put together on the Ford Barn website: http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showth...5301&showall=1
If you post pictures of your engine I will try to narrow down the original year for the major components.
Does the serial number on the transmission match the frame (and title)? The transmission is the only drive train component that can be serial number matched to a 1932 to 1948 Ford car or 1932 to 1947 Ford truck. The engine was intended to be replaceable.
I will try and get some pics this wknd (motor is in truck).
There is NO serial number in the location north of the inspection cover. Does the HD 4-spd unit have it stamped elsewhere?
I had no title; had to go thru the DMV hoops to get one.
The flat area above the inspection cover is the only place serial numbers were stamped in 1940. You may have a later transmission case. Have you really scrubbed on that flat area? 70+ years of rust and grime can really hide stamped numbers.
