I have a 2007 F-250 that has a occasional hard to start condition when it is warm.It has an erratic idle when this is about to happen.I have new Racor fuel filters fuel system is clean, new batteries.I have a scangauge 2 ficm logic and control volts are within specs. No active or logged fault codes.Local Diesel shop tells me these problems are very hard to diagnose and repair. This truck has 75k one owner, factory stock never any problems,I'm wondering what to do next.Any insight from the experts on this forum would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,Scotty
I know nothing about scanguage, does it read high pressure oil? you might have a leak in the system. Easy enough to diagnose if you want to dig into it yourself. Next time it does it, try unplugging the icp wiring on the passenger side valve cover and try starting it.
Quick and easy test... plug a voltmeter into the gray/red and blue/green wires coming out of the icp (probe them) and watch the volts when cranking. You should see at least 0.82, hopefully more. 0.82 equals 500psi of high pressure oil. This is required before the pcm will give the ficm the ok to fire injectors. When I had a standpipe leak or when the O-rings were washed out in my injectors, I would only see about 0.55 volts, and it wouldn't start hot. Let it cool off, it would go to about 0.80 or slightly less, and it would start to fire, spin faster, make more oil pressure and start.
This is why good batteries are so important on these trucks... if you ever had a look at the high pressure oil readings when you were cranking it, you would see why. It doesn't get a whole bunch above 500 lbs cranking, and if your batteries are weak, it just might not make 500.
I just switched from Rotella-T to Rotella T6. My first trip after changing was to Missouri and at my first fuel stop it took a loooong time to crank. This worried me and I started watching my ICP. It was hovering around 590 at idle, 2100 at speed. I checked it at every restart afterward, but it never duplicated the hard start. ICP still reads uncomfortably low at idle, but it's started fine. I'm chalking it all up to the switch to synthetic.
Sorry John,I was beamed up for a bit...
Reading volts off my Scan Gauge ll I have 0.86 up to 1.26 I C P volts when cranking and running. I'm leaning towards a H P O P leakdown. I wish I could find a good honest Ford Tech in my area.
Has anyone heard or done any business with Performance Authority In Bend,Oregon.Shy of taking my truck over the mountain to the big city.I don't know of a reputable shop to trust my truck with....
Are you sure you don't want to tackle it yourself? Do you have a shop.. compressed air.. multimeter.. if it's a blown standpipe o-ring, it's not very hard to fix, and you will save lots of money

Performance Authority is supposed to be a pretty competent shop. I have no experience with them, I have a friend that is friends with the owner. Also not sure how well they are at working on 6.0s.
