Transfer case questions

Hey all!

I'm at an impass on the low-buck project... I have two directions I could follow as far as the transfer case. I managed to pick up a 2wd NP435 to adapt to the dana20, also picked up a 4wd NP435 with t/case and adapter...

After looking at the 205, it really doesn't seem it would fit between the framerails. And losing that low gearing isn't too appealing either.

The prospect of shelling out $350. for an adapter makes me cringe as to date total spent on this project has been only $327.48... including the Bronco!

On another note. The new body mounts and 3" body lift have been installed, and the F150 axles are ready to go in. Still have to figure out a steering box and braking system and soon it will be time to play in the mud!

If anyone has fixed their own delema like this, please let me know!

Thanks, The cheap b******!

With a little over $300 into your project, spend the money and get the right adaptor. It will save time, money and headaches in the long run. I have dealt with many homemade adaptors that caused premature transmission failure because the tolerances were off or they were not quite straight.

Sell the 4wd 435 and the transfer case to help offset the cost.

If you can find a 6 cyl Bronco adaptor, you can buy a plate adaptor which is much cheaper than the 1 piece unit.

Transfer case questions

Thanks for the info Jason!

If possible, how can I find out if the adapter in the Bronco is for the V-8 or the I-6? After running the numbers, I found out its supposed to be an I-6 in there. And the casting number on the bell housing says its a '79.... is it posible that I already have the I-6 adapter, and if so, where would I find the plate you talked about?

On another note, I managed to trade off the old DANA30 for a rear disc setup (using mid 80's GM calipers), but I'm unsure as to what master to use for the disc/disc instead of disc/drum setup I have now..... Any ideas?

Ok, the Bronco 6 cyl adaptor measures approx 6 1/2" from mounting flange to mounting flange. There are 2 different V8 adaptors. One is about 8 7/8" and the other is 9 3/8".

You can get the plate from most of the Bronco parts suppliers. I have seen quite a few of them on Ebay lately, sometimes with the adaptor for under $200.

As for the disc brake master cylinder, there are many different options available. Some of the Bronco places are selling a matched power booster and master cylinder specifically for a 4 wheel disc application. Others have had success using a stock drum master cylinder (with the residual check valves removed) and the drum distribution block. I have found that every Bronco reacts differently. Usually start with a baseline, drive it and note how the brakes feel and go from there.

Right On!

I have the I-6 adapter! Now I wont have to break my piggy bank... just bruise it a little. I found the jewel at bcbroncos for $250, but a little shopping around may be in order.

As for the master cylinder, I think that one off of a late model Crown Vic may work, just have to rework the brake lines to accept metric ends. Also will have to use an adjustable balance valve.

Thanks to all for the info! I'll let you know how it turns out!

Transfer case questions

Thanks for the info!

Found a machinist (sp?) here in town that has done this adapter before and will only charge me $50.00 for his time. Not a bad deal.

I may end up hitting him up for the F150 box brace as well!

I'll let you know how it turns out...
