E4OD is slipping

Hey, I have an E350 1992 7.3l Diesel, with E40D.
The tranmission slips in the 3rd and OD position. Every time, if I want to accelerate it slips for a few seconds and then the drivetrain is correct connected. The shifting into another gear works properly, the transmissions slips by changing from free-wheeling into accelerating ( for example: at speed 90km/h and no changing the gear).
I have recogniced that the oil temperatur is getting higher now. That may an indication for additional losses in the transmission.
Are there anybody, who have any suggestions? Here in Germany it is impossible to get any informations.
What do I have to check?

Thank you for the answers

I would check the torque converter for overheating. The way to do this is to remove the cover on the front of the transmission bellhousing. This is the cover to remove the nuts that hold the torque converter to the flex plate. Once you can see the torque converter look at it's color. Is it plain metal? Does it have a blue tint, like the blueing on a gun? If so, the torque converter must be replaced.

Hello Mark,
sorry, for the delay, but I was not at my office the last days.

Thanks for your answer.
Im not sure, that it is the torque converter.
-)At first the temperature was not over 95°C. I always checked it while driving (temperatur display). But I will check the color of the housing at the weekend.
-) Second, the paddle wheels in the torque converter connect both sides together via the hydraulic oil. And if there is something broken, there is no power at all. Even if the adjustment of the wheels do not work properly, there is anyhow a constant power flow in the transmission. You do not recognice a short slipping or suddering ( it passed quickly), as I do, if you want to speed up.

In my opinion, the problem are the brake belts, but I am not sure at all, because they have an self adjustment system, or not?

What is your opinion? Why do you think the torque converter is overheat?

There are no brake belts in that transmission. (except when in 2nd gear with the shift handle in the 2 position.) None of the clutches can be adjusted. There isn't anything in this transmission that can be adjusted.

If the engine speed freely rises when it should be driving the wheels the chances are that the direct clutch has been destroyed. The fiction material probably has failed and now the clutch is working with metal to metal contact. This would take a replacement or a rebuild to fix.

Hello Mark,
this weekend I checked the color of the torque converter, it was not easy to get the cover away.
The converter seemed to be ok. It looks metallic with a small blue band (from welding). I have made pictures, if you want to see them.
I think it is ok, no overheating.

Is there I way to localize the error further more? The parts are very expensive in Germany, so I have to decide what I have to change.

Thank you for the answer.
