I have finished my flatbed for my 78 F150 with a 6 inch lift and 35s now i'm looking to build a off-road style front bumper. I have a new stick/tig welder coming, so i'm looking for a new project to start on. I would just go for it and make one, but I don't have the funds to waste metal, so i'm trying to get a game plan down.
Installing a winch? If so, order a universal winch plate and then build around it.
Second, what features are required or desired? Off-road lights? Recovery points?
I think the low-buck and relatively lightweight way to go is with a .120-wall tubing skeleton with voids filled with 1/8th-inch or 3/16th-inch steel plate. The mounting brackets should be at least 3/16ths.
here's mine for my 1978 F150, supposedly off a 1970s military truck, fits the frame rails perfectly. If you want measurements I can get them for you. It's pretty insane, mostly 1/4" and even 3/8" steel.
