Why on my 2001 Superduty if you blow a line nothing works and you have no brakes?
On my older vehicles I think it was called a duel Master Cylinder and if you blew lines in front the back would still work and if you blew a line in back the fronts would still work.
When I blow a line on my f250 there are no brakes at all making it quite deadly.
Duel: a prearranged combat between two persons, fought with deadly weapons according to an accepted code of procedure, especially to settle a private quarrel.
Your Super Duty does have a dual master cylinder, but even that safety feature doesn't prevent a total brake failure under all conditions.
You do also have a parking/emergency brake that can be used to safely stop the vehicle.
Interesting question. If I remember correctly, on the older dual master cylinders if you took off the metal top you could see the two sections for the front and rear circuits. If you blew a brake line one section would empty and the other would not. The new dual master cylinders have a plastic reservoir which appears to be common to both brake circuits. So if you blow a brake line does the good circuit still work only until the resevoir gets emptied?
There is a divider inside the master cylinder that retains a portion of the fluid for each half of the braking system. The fluid level is well above the divider
to provide a larger reservoir for both halves.
Are you certain both the front and rear brake systems were working correctly before the failure? Your rear brakes may have become seized up due to rust and rendered ineffective beforehand, since the front brakes provide most of your stopping power the rears can rust up or degrade over time and you may not have noticed a slow change in performance. I recently rebuilt the entire brake system on an older ranger where the rear brakes had been completely blocked off at some point and the owner had no idea.
