I have used their Supreme 9000 fully synthetic oil in my truck since I bought it and it seems to have done a good job with ~5k mile intervals. I do not have any used oil analysis to back that statement up but the heads seemed really clean with no sludge buildup when I had the valve covers off about 3 months ago. That was after owning the truck for about 6 years/160k miles.

Used it in several diesels, gas engines, gearboxes, import cars to domestic with no problems, oil sample history will only prove good value.

I just switched this last oil change from Rotella T, and I used some oil with rottel T but as of today, 4500 miles have not use one drop. Also I noticed a smoother running truch as soon as I put it in, after oil change. Its hard to say now on smooth nice, but so far I like it. Oh, I used sheaffer 7000.

My thinking is any oil that's matched up to application is good, but the question is, how long, that's where lab reports tell a lot of the story.

Schaeffers is supposedly good stuff. Ive never used the oil, but have the schaeffers trans fluid in my bts tranny. Brian swears by it. For engine oil, everyone always compares the other stuff back to rotella T. Ask any diesel mechanic across the country and most if not all will swear by rotella t, if its the benchmark that is constantly compared against and sworn upon by many, its good enough for me. Ive used the hot shot before during the winter when i was having a case of the romps, i had good results. Supposed to do better with the 6.0s in dealing with the "stiction".

I got a PM several days ago from Stewart asking me to pitch in on this thread, but have just now gotten to where I can put my thoughts together for the OP. This is a little long, and some of you reading this have already seen most or all of it from me in the past, but this is primarily addressed to the OP and his initial inquiry.

First off, to the OP, I was a rep for Schaeffer Manufacturing for almost 4 years, but was using their engine oil in my 7.3's for 3 years before ever joining their forces, and I only stopped because they wanted a higher sales volume than I could provide. You see, I got laid off for the first time in my 26-year career in engineering and manufacturing in late 2009, and Schaeffer offered a good opportunity to step out of the manufacturing world and work with something a lot more fun. I was laid off for a year, and then went back to the engineering firm full time while continuing to try to make sales with Schaeffer. In the end, I simply could not grow my Schaeffer sales fast enough while I was working full-time as an engineer, so I had to let go of the job with Schaeffer in summer 2013.

Being an chemical engineer (by training and career choice), I did a lot of research before using their initially switching to their 9000 series 5w40 synthetic oil, and I did a whole lot more research to evaluate their marketing claims when I started representing them. The particular subjects I researched were the mechanisms related to the use of "extreme pressure additives" (like moly, titanium, zinc, etc.), oil viscosity dynamics, combustion byproduct neutralization, defoamer additives, the technology behind diesel fuel additives, etc. From everything I read and found from third party companies and organizations, Schaeffer's claims were consistently substantiated. I will admit, though, that some of the sales reps who have no chemistry or engineering or manufacturing background will sometimes misrepresent the science and make inaccurate claims, but that is generally done out of ignorance with no bad intention. Regardless, the real world basis behind the claims in their literature is substantiated by real science.

Anyway, in the time I worked as a rep, I spent a lot of time reviewing tech data sheets and friction testing with a wide variety of engine oils against Schaeffer's 9000 and 7000 series diesel engine oils. Simply put, what I found was that some brands are really good alternatives to the Schaeffer products, but I could not find any to beat them on a technical basis.

Let's consider the real world for a few moments, though.

Availability
Schaeffer does not market through box stores or spend much time trying to tap into the retail market, and therefore focus primarily on word-of-mouth wholesale to businesses and industry. Consequently, even though they tend to be the most cost-effective and technically advanced options, they are not readily available to everyone.

Applicability
It seems that vehicle engines are somewhat unique from vehicle to vehicle due to inherent variances in manufacturing tolerances and highly variable differences in the driving styles of their owners. When you combine those variables together for a specific truck, each specific engine almost develops its own "personality", as it were, and therefore tends to "like" or "tolerate" or "perform better" with some oil brands (specifications) better than others.

My Personal Experience
All that being said, I'm running my two 7.3's right now at about 15k-18k between oil changes with no issues whatsoever. Both vehicles have a Racor bypass filtration system (3 micron), which is why I can run above the 10K mark the way I do. I've been running the 9000 series 5w40 for 7 years now in my F250 (roughly 130K miles on this one oil brand and weight), and started it on this oil at about the 130K mile mark in its life. I've only run the 7000 sreies 15w40 a few times when I was out of the 5w40, and only ran it then because I had it left over from my days as a Schaeffer rep. Most of what I sold to diesel owners was the 7000 series 15w40 oil, but more and more were swapping to the fully syn 5w40 9000 series.

Bottom Line
I will run the Schaeffer products as long as I can obtain them on a cost-effective basis (total cost of use, meaning the total dollars I spend per 1,000 miles on additive, fuel, oil, and filters). If I ever cannot get Schaeffer oil, I will probably use either Mobil 1 or Rotella T6, and might consider Royal Purple as well depending on total cost per gallon of oil. If I cannot get the Schaeffer fuel additive, I'll alternate between the Opti-lube XPD and Diesel Kleen products. ...Unless and until I can find something better (more cost-effective) than any of those oil and additive product lines.

... just another perspective on the issue.

Great response Pete......

I was also a Schaeffer's sales rep when I lived in Oklahoma. I have been running the Series 7000 15W-40 for almost 10 years in my F-250, 8-10K Oil Change Intervals with the Oilguard Bypass Filter. Been running it in our Excursion as well since we purchased it @ 3+ years ago. During the winter months I switch over to the series 9000 5W-40 for better cold starts. We also switched over all my brother-in-law's farm equipment, combine & tractors over about 4+ years ago.

I have been doing used oil analysis reports as well with excellent results. In addition to the oil the fuel additive is an excellent product. We have yet to jell up during the winter......knock on wood.....

Price wise - @ $20 per gallon for the 15W-40 oil

@ $22 for the 5W-40

If I wasn't able to get Schaeffer's - Delo 400 15W-40 would be my next choice. Have seen many excellent Used Oil Analysis Reports on this as well.

No worries about a scam - it's what they say it is and there Chief Chemist is second to none. There are only about a dozen folks in the country with his certifications & education.

I used Schaeffer's 9000 for 3 oil changes in my truck and 3 oil changes in my tdi. The truck ran well and i was changing my oil at the 6-6500 mark. My OA (from Schaeffer's) cam back good and was told that I could extend my mileage. My TDI did not run as well, so I switched back to Liquimoly.

I started off paying $120 and quit when the price hit $135 for a five gallon pail. I switched over to Rotella T 5w40 at under $20 a gallon. Honestly, I can't tell a difference and I am on my 2nd change with Rotella. Consumption is slightly more with the Rotella, may be 1 quart more over what I used with the 9000. If the price was the same, I'd use the 9000 even with the inconvenience of a 5 gallon pail, over the Rotella.

I use Schaeffer's Trans fluid in my truck and on my snow plow and I have nothing bad to say about it. I will definitely use it when it's time to do a fluid change.

If it makes fiscal sense use it. I have used it in my 6.0 for 100k with 10k oil changes. Oil analysis has come back good every time.

Cheers

You can buy the 5W-40 & 15W-40 oil in gallon containers as well......Also, make sure your buying directly from a sales rep next time so you can save some $. If you buy it from a retailer you can pay 15-20% more.........

Prolong or oil supplements with Schaeffers Oil?

Did you run any prolong or other oil supplements in your 7.3? I've previously been told to with Schaeffers Oil.

@Wedgewoodblue7.3 , welcome to the FTE!

This thread is a few dozen months old, but the general rule of thumb is "no" on oil additive and "yes" on fuel additive for our HEUI injectors.

I was told by a diesel mechanic here to run an oil additive and is it bad to switch oil brands when its ran Rotella for 250k
