So the 77 f250 SC is pulling the camper for the first time today. Couple problems so far. Frontend is very squirrelly. Was bad before but gets multiplied with the weight on back. Not enough power. Need to get a 4bbl on it. Need to upgrade wiring for camper hook up. Planned anyway.
Towing a trailer definitely multiplies front end problems. Good thing most front end work is pretty basic. I'd say you have some good motivation now to go through that front end.
Check your rear suspension and make sure it's not starting to sag. Overload springs and shocks sure help. Some people may argue this point but make sure your sway bar bushings/rubbers are in good shape front and rear. plus whats mentioned above. And most of all, enjoy the vacation.
I tow my 30 footer with no problem. There is even a full ton of gear in the bed in this pic. Obviously I use a weight distributing hitch, but I have a sway controller on it too. I dragged it from SoCal to Ft. Worth last month and it ran straight as an arrow through a monsoon in west TX. It is possible to make your truck a great tow vehicle. Check your ball joints and bushings and make sure you use the right hitch and set it up properly. You can put a lot of preload on the spring bars and transfer a fair amount of weight to the front end which affects handling and control tremendously.
Got under it and looked, draglink is in BAD shape. Everything else looked to be in good condition. Gonna replace drag link and fix leak in gearbox, also do some plugs and hopefully get the trailer brakes to work. Truck already has overload springs in back, as it once hauled around a truck camper. Definitely think I will be getting a WD hitch, been wanting one for a while. Heading out again friday, so hopeful have at least the drag link and brakes fixed.
