2005 ford expedition:
Hello all,
Im having difficulty removing the rear cv axles. Is there a special tool required to get them out of the differential?

You can pry real hard or find the special tool somewhere. I've attached the work shop manual pages.

wow thanks for that! So i guess for the install, just gets pushed back in? Whats the deal with that circlip though? whats its purpose? I know it has one lol.. I have reman axles that have new ones. Im in the process of swapping the rear. I actually opened the rear (tight quarters) because my cousin told me that there are c clips that need to be disengaged inside the diff. Theres no way to see anything really. Hes a ford mechanic (i now however know that hes wrong according to your pages).
Thanks

The circlip just locks the upper shaft spline in place in the receiver.. To remove, as alloro suggested, pull like crazy and the circlip will compress enough to allow removal.
When inserting the new cv axle assemblies, push in until you hear and/or feel a click. You're good to go.

Oh it compresses with the outward pressure.. Makes perfect sense now.. Im just gonna use a large pry bar. Not worried about damage being that im replacing the rear end and halfshafts. For the replacement rear, i understand that its not a limited slip but i have picked up the motorcraft friction modifier anyway. Will it hurt this rear to put in two 4oz bottles?

Personally, I'd stick to the mfg recommendations. I'm not sure more is better in this case.

Use 2 if you have them, one on each side. This will apply more even pressure and allow it to pop out easier.

Ok, Yes the double pry worked out great. I used a 4' and a 2'. They popped right out with some pressure. Taking the rear end out was not too bad at all.. Basically just let it drop in my driveway. However installing the replacement was not an easy job for myself. It was very difficult lifting it up in there.. 30 minutes later, got it in without indecent. Any kind of grease or sealant required for the new axle seals that press up to the differential or nothing at all? Thanks

I didnt think it could hurt but then again, im a general contractor not a mechanic. So i will not add it in if there's a chance it could be an issue. I picked up 'Lucas 10122 75/140 Synthetic Gear Oil' on amazon.
Thank you

Always lube new seals with at least what you are using for lube in the unit.

Ditto, take axle fluid and wet the shafts and seals before reassembly.
