I've been [elbow] deep in my truck for the past couple of weeks trying to figure out why it keeps stalling, and not wanting to immediately restart, at stop lights, corners, etc. It's a '79 F100, 2wd with a 302W and a 4 bbl carb. I thought it was vapor lock, so I put thermal shielding on the fuel line by the block, but it's still happening. Could it just be that the carb needs to be tuned, or something more sinister? Any answers, conjecture, or just straight up swearing would be greatly appreciated.
need some more details. does it idle normally when you first start it (in park). Does the problem only happen with the tranny in drive (assuming auto)...is it worse when the brake is depressed?
It happens when I'm in any forward gear (c4 auto: D, 2, 1), usually when I'm in drive. It does happen when my foot is on the brake, but having my foot off the gas seems to have more to do with it than having my foot actually on the brake. In park it idles pretty high, and usually has a tough time firing up when I go to start it. If I'm driving down the road it works fine and pulls hard with no hiccups. To be clear, the ignition, starter, spark plugs, etc. are all in good working order.
When you brake, corner, etc., the fuel rushes towards the front of the float bowl, if the float is adjusted on the low side you'll starve the motor. Re-set float and all is golden.
Awesome, so on to the next rookie question: Would replacing the entire sending unit fix this problem as well? My feeling is that after 35 years it might be about time, and if I'm going through the trouble of getting into the fuel tank that I may as well. How hard would it be to get this taken care of?
EDIT: I think I may have misunderstood, are you talking about the float in the carb bowl?
Got it, I really appreciate the advice, time to go to town on the carb. Hopefully some of the Edelbrock carb horror stories I've heard aren't coming my way...

I never understood the bad rap, Eddy's are pretty simple and straight forward, certainly more so than Holley's anyway. Eddy carbs are basically "set it and forget it" I haven't touched my current Eddy in over ten years....no need to. Holley's are more fickle, a cloud rolls over and drops temps 20 degrees and you need to re-adjust the damn thing.
My one and only complaint with Eddy's is the small float bowl, it tends to evaporate the fuel more quickly due to its small size, and the fact that Eddy's draw their pump shot from the top of the bowl doesn't help matters any. It can make for difficult starts (excess cranking) after the truck sits for an extended period of time.
Glad to hear it, maybe I'll just keep a can of ether on me from now on. Time to get this thing dialed in, I'd ask for specific advice on setting the float and tuning the carb, but I'm sure there are threads already out there for me to peruse. However if anyone has a link to such a thread it would be appreciated.

If you go on edelbrock's web site the manuals for all their carbs are available for download. They are very simple to tune and rebuild. May want to think about a rebuild since it will be opened up for the float adjustment anyway. Also check out you tube. They may have a rebuild tutorial on there.
