Ok I have an f 150 04 fx4. 120k miles. I was checking a drip on the transmission cooler, and noticed my passenger side coil spring is broken 2nd coil from the bottom. Truck rides well, but obviously this needs to be addressed. Break looks old since it is rusted over, I probably relocated from new England to Florida driving this down 95 with this break, scary.
Anyway, ford dealer quoted me $140 for the part, a lock shop quoted me $240. I guess the $130 is for the spring only, and $240 is for thevspring and strut? I didn't ask at the time, but that must be the case. Also is it recommended to replace both sides? Drivers side looks ok. Thanks
Not sure what your second paragraph is saying but look on Amazon for a pair of Moog springs. I recently bought an OEM replacement set for less than $100 shipped to my door.
my error in typing on an I-pad. Should read Ford wanted $130, I guess that's just for the spring. a Local repair shop quoted me $240 a side for parts, which includes the struts, which probably need to be replaced anyway after 120k miles.
I am not savvy enough to do this repair myself, no way. Labor they say will be about 2 hours. This is for a monroe spring/strut pre assembled unit I believe.
Perhaps if the spring and shock were both replaced that $240 each isn't out of the realm of possibility, depending what brand shock and the nature of their warranty is.
Labor @ 1 hour each side is about right---seems fair to me all things considered.
No, I think he means strut.
I didn't know this till a couple years ago, but there is a big difference in front suspension design going from a 97-03 (and 04 Heritage) F-150 to a 2004 (not Heritage) F-150. The new 2004 front suspension uses struts! And also has rack and pinion steering, not the recirculating-ball steering gearbox of old.
Thanks all for the help. Correct beginning with the new body style in 2004 it is a front strut, back has shocks and leaf springs. Truck should be almost done, garage showed me parts they are using, it was a Monroe part, came all preassembled, strut, spring and hardware..expensive repair for sure, plus will need an alignment as well..figured better to do both sides at once as the drivers spring wasn't broken but looked pretty rusted out after 10 new england winters. Maybe my imagination but also looked "beefier" than the OEM parts...I will see if I notice a difference when I drive it home..
