Quick question. How much should I spend on regearing from 3.73s to 4.30s? I am trying to determine a budget for this project on the truck. The truck has a an E locker.
Afterall, I went from a 31.6 inch tall tire to 33.2 inches. This reduced my effective axle ratio to around 3.55. To bump it close to stock, I would have to regear to 3.93 according to the calculators I found on the matter. If figured if I elect to regear, why not go to 4.30s and get a descent jump in performance.
When you go from the 3:73 to say 4:30 you may have to change your carrier, or use a space because the pinion is that much smaller, this info you really need to research. ryder racing is one place I would checkout they eat, sleep gears. Even though your going alittle bit bigger in tires that jump in ratio will hurt fuel mileage , low end power as well. talk to some one who knows. DTS is another place to check out, but not just check out call them, tell them what you want, any future plans, going bigger, highway driving, off road power. they will know, Everyone on this site has there expertise and what they went through, but it might not be what you want. I had 3:73 in my 99PSD and replaced with lockers and 5:13, I Knew I wanted to go big and with my over drive, she does well on the highway, but im at red line at 80, should have gone taller but, this isnt my highway truck, so for me its fine.
I usually figure around $1,000 an axle if done at a shop with a decent gear set. What issue are you having that you need to re-gear? That is less than a 5% change in diameter and is almost irrelevant to on-the-road performance. In fact I think there is a greater variation in the stock tires that come as options on the F250. I've swapped in tires that little bit larger and couldn't feel the difference driving at all.
You wont need to change the carrier for 4:30, As said it runs right around $1000 per axle and that is about what it cost me to do mine.. I have heard the 6.2 is a amimal with 4:30's
I was thinking about going the 4.30 route for the towing aspect. I feel the 3.73s are a bit soft. Since I bought the truck used, it might have been nice to swap gears. However at $2000, I might just wait a while for the truck to be paid off before I pull the trigger on a set of gears.
Not a big rush. Just trying to get an idea of the costs involved. I was looking at gear sets. They were running around $500 and posters on various forums all said year it should cost $500 per axle. It didn't compute in my head unless I did the work.
If the cost was going to be around $1000-1400 complete, I would seriously think about. Gas mileage is no big thing cause I didn't buy the truck for a gas mileage. As it is right now, it is my DD. My wife and I are trying to get it paid off quickly so we can pick up a new ride for her. She doesn't mind the Explorer but she rather have a sedan for commuting.
