transmission won't shift out of first
i have a 1993 5.8L auto and all the sudden my rmp's shot up and couldn't get it to come out of first gear. I can stop use reverse and go back into drive again still stays in first gear. I called my mechanic he didn't have any ideas right of just wanted to look at it. I check the fluid it's good could probably be changed but i've never had and slipping or tranny issues before.
Would it be fine to drive slow to get it to the garage? any ideas what mite be going on? Oh and a check engine light came on right before this happened, as well as ABS light that was never on before.

The guy above me knows his ****. He helped me narrow down what was happening to my truck when it had tranny problems.
Had an issue with my truck intermittently going in and out of limp mode. Harsh shifting, blinking OD light, wobbly speedo, the whole 9 yards. It only happened maybe once every two weeks.
Pulled the codes manually through the test port mounted to the driver's side fender under the hood. By connecting one end of the wire to the negative terminal on the battery, and the other end of the wire inside the tiny gray box clipped into the test port, I was able to play "Morse code" with my check engine light and find the underlying issue. Code 452 which is bad signal from Vehicle Speed Sensor or PSOM (programmable speedometer/odometer module). replaced both and have been fine since.( there are step by step guides on doing this as well as pages which tell you what the code you pulled means). All thanks to RLA.
Take his advice. Pull the codes. She's trying to tell you something!

The transmission in your truck is 100% computer controlled by the same PCM that operates the engine and it is doing exactly what it was programmed to do when it loses contact with one or more of the critical sensors.. vehicle speed, throttle position, trans shift lever position. The first thing you or your mechanic needs to do is pull the codes and make repairs to fix whatever problem was causing them. If your mechanic comes back and says the trans needs an overhaul and hasn't completed the above work first then you need to go get your truck and take it to somebody with a clue, otherwise you will spend thousands of dollars and still have the same problem. Bottom line is your truck has a sensor problem NOT A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM.

Conanski is right. There's been too many times friends of mine have taken their vehicles to a "professional" only to spend thousands of dollars to solve nothing. When my transmission was acting up, all of those sensors were my first suspects. Good luck and I hope you figure it out. Keep us updated

truck is still at my mechanic i tried calling he said there's a "gurgling sound" you can hear from the inside cab that he's not sure what it is.
Speedometer isn't doing anything out off the ordinary that i noticed.
