Stuff it with more diesel until you see it in the fill neck. Mine used to take +5 gallons after the handle clicked before I did the harpoon mod, now it takes 32 gallons and tops off with maybe an extra 1/2gal.

I can never get more than 30 gals in my 35 gal gas tank. I have never liked the idea of not knowing exactly how much fuel I really have left. Is it too much to ask to have an accurate gage?

There is about a 5 gallons reserve after the needle hits E and the message center reads 0 Miles Until Empty. I had to run 40 miles after the empty mark once because that was the closest gas station. I put over 36 gallons into the tank. It was starting to sputter when I would stop and go.

I would be careful with filling the filler tube. Could get gas or diesel in the vapor charcoal can and ruin it.

To the OP, I don't know if you're asking a question or making an observation.

You shouldn't be letting your fuel get that low anyway. It's a bad bad habit. That's why ford has sort of built in the reserve. Your $50,000+ truck does NOT like air in the system. Filling up at 1/4 is cheap insurance to prevent a multi thousand dollar fuel system repair.

Have to agree with Trey, I don't know why you'd want to run it any lower than that. If you haven't run out of fuel you don't know exactly how much usable fuel that you have left. DON'T run your truck out of fuel to find out, you can cause permanent catastrophic damage to your high pressure fuel system.

No reason to fill all the way up to the filler neck either. Never understood the purpose of that.

Why not turn wasted air space into an extra hundred miles on a tank?

Well I don't know what you're doing, but both times I filled to the neck I got 3 gallons. Which doesn't net me 100 miles. Simply not worth my time.

Hutch or Harpoon mod, plus 5.5 gallons without having to trickle any in. Used to go 27 gallons when the pump would click, now it goes 32-33 gallons. No extra time, no extra effort, just not wasting the air space in the tank.

I'm not understanding the aversion from you and Tom. It's a proven mod that was originally posted a decade ago next month right here on the SD board, guzzle put it on his page, and I've seen it on other diesel boards. I'm not exactly breaking new ground here.

No aversion, just that I don't see the point in spending the time doing it, than that's all. About the only way I would go through the effort to pull the tank for more fuel capacity would be to install a bigger tank.

To each his own I guess.

For me, filling up to the neck is force of habit. Always have. Different pumps click off at different pressures. To get best accurate gas mileage, keep filling up to the top, calculate off of my trip odometer, and reset.

Does it really matter? Probably not. Guess I am a little ****...
