1979 F250

1979 F250 4x4 400/c6

New compressor
New dryer
New expansion valve
1 junkyard hose from the condenser to the expansion valve. The truck was sitting for a few months, and released air when i removed the hose so i figured it was solid.

I rented a 1.5cfm vacuum pump and gauges from AutoZone.

I have replaced all orings.

I am 864 feet above sea level, Pasadena, Ca.

I have worked through this for about 3 weekends. I have put the pump on it for about 2 hours at most, and can only get down around 26.
I "retrofitted" for r134, consisting of changing orings and adding fittings.

I have never done any a/c work before. I bought a Haynes Automotive Heating & Air Conditioning book and have been going by that.
I have the pump on it right now, reading 26. Been there 1 1/2 hours.

Whats the next step?

Remove the pump and charge the system.

Ok.
Its 6am and i havent checked if it has held vacuum overnight.

If it still reads 26, do i leave that vacuum in there? Or do i release it, then charge it?

Do not release the vacuum, that would fill the system back up with air and defeat the whole purpose of vacuuming it.

It can take some time. The pressure in the can decreases as the temperature of the refrigerant does.

I was out there long enough to blow the fuse.

I dont have a heater control valve installed, i replaced the hose and the cv was so corroded that i just put a straight hose. I have one ordered. Is not having it going to affect anything?
