i have a 98 eb expy with the 5.4l cannot seem to find the cause of my miss at the 1400 rpm range. REplaced plugs, had coils checked at stealership replaced tps sensor, o2 sensors, and fuel filter, cleaned maf throttle body and iac valve, flushed tranny and t- case. Still have the same miss could a maf sensor be going out and not throw a code. No cel light or codes stored. I know i will have to replace the torque converter which i here is a common problem with the 4r100 trannies. It feels like it has alot of play in the drivetrain when it bucks and jerks at about 1400 rpm's replaced all u-joints. ANy ideas would be helpful Stealership is about as knowledgeable as taking it to the local grade school.
My 97 expedition does the same thing. I've had nothing but problems with it since I bought it though. The check engine light comes and goes though, and always throws the same code - the 02 sensor. But we replaced everything that has to do with the 02 sensor. It makes a tin can noise though that someone recommended I check the torq or the catalytic converter on it.

Dude, I have the EXACT same problem. I have tried all the same remedies you have, as well as the PCV valve, fuel injectors, etc. I have yet to find the problem as well. I have also replaced 6 of 8 coils as well. I am so stumped.......................Just one question, your miss at 1400 rpms is at idle right ? Mine does this, as well as the same thing in gear at around 900 rpm. Does yours ?
Mine does it right about 1400 or so but you can feel it some in the idle kindof like a roughness to it. It does the bucking deal like when your cruising about 35 or so and lightly touch the throttle but if you accelerate it goes away. I'mstumped to done replaced about everything besides the blinker fluid Let me know if anyone has fixed their problem with this ordeal
May I suggest....
I have a Lighning '99. No mods at all.
I did the supercharger bypass valve change. This involves re-routing a couple of vacum hoses. My truck began this behavior shortly afterwards, so I changed it back to stock. This missing, suge and what you discribe continued. The problem was a vacum hose. It was blocked off my being shoved into an elbow too far. So far that it was closed off on the end. I pulled it out slightly and this miss went away imediately. I know you don't have a supercharger and this may not apply but I would suggest looking at vacum hoses. A vacum problem can commonly cause this miss at low rpm cruise with no load or a slight coast situation. Irritating to say the least. At the factory, they commonly just jab the parts together without reguard.....
My '99 started doing the sputter/miss today, first thought coil but no code set, hardly at idle just under slight accel. made a few stops and about an hour later got in it and it's gone runs, drives great no stumble or miss, any help????please, it's my wifes and I don't want her to get off and it quit.
I am hooking my F150 up to the analyzer Tuesday. My bud thinks its a A/C drip on to the coil or oxy sensor near plug #4. I will see if it is the O2 code and let you know. Mine misses under load-out of the hole, then flattens out, the once in overdrive about 60 mph. If I drop it into 3rd then it flattens out at hight speed. 100k service was just done but will not pay the stealership the $120 to hook it up--they know what it is.
I have a 2001 Expy with only 30K miles. Same symptom with the "bucking". It happens around 1500-1700 rpm. While in park, the engine also runs rough around 1500-1700 rpm. I get an occasional miss @ 60mph.
I initially thought it was the fuel system . I just filled up with premium and used some injector cleaner. The problems seems to have gotten much better.
The car is now cold, I'll check again later to see if the problem persists.
I had the trans flushed and refilled last week because of the rumble strip action in the upper gears, that part went away and this started, could it be the torque convertor or trans going out????? Seems weird...for the last 3 mornings it misses, aputters, coughts etc with my wife on her way to work, then after that it seems to be fine, Must have morning sickness..
I had it hooked up and it had a recent code-P0304, and two old ones-P0171 and P0174. The heater hose over the #4 COP was shot because of the leak and replaced. There was also two secondary problems causing the oxy sensor to attempt to adjust the fuel to rich. This was vacuum leaks in the crankcase and PVC hose assembly. Truck is running great, but the check engine light came back on solid. Might just need to clear it or there could be another problem. Does not seem like it though.
