460 exhaust pipe

460 exhaust pipe
Hi guys and girls, have a 1988 f250 with the 460. There is about a 1 inch in diameter and 6 inches long pipe coming off the exhaust that continues with rubber hose. Where does it go and what does it do. One of them has rusted off , will that hurt anything? Thanks for any help.

Those are for your a.i.r. system air pump. there should be a diverter valve on the end where the rubber hose hooks ups. Was you air pump removed? Sometimes you get an exhaust leak from that pipe, but other than let there is no problem, if you want to neaten it up you can cut it off and weld shut the exhaust.

Air pump hasent been removed, Just seems like my great fuel milage has gone to pot and was wondering it that was the reason. I`m second owner , it only has 66,000 miles on it.

Great mileage was a joke, we all know 460`s like to drink the fuel. But lately just seems to be drinking more. I have a camper in the bed and pull a 16ft enclosed trailer full with 4 wheeler and camping gear.haven`t actually checked the mileage lately but seems worse.
