Did my headlight lenses with 3M Headlight Lens Restoration Kit 39008. Works EXCELLENT! Did my truck and a TDI Beetle, and still have enough to do another vehicle for $15.00.
3M products usually rock, thanks for guinea-pigging it. I used a Mother's kit and while it helped, the lenses had crazing that was too deep to fix. Did my Aerostar same time, looked good but got hazy again in about a year.
The instructions said 3M has a product you put on a couple times a year to prevent that from happening. On the first 500 sanding pad you could finally sand below the deep scratches and watch them disappear. I did however have a few that remained. I took my time and made sure I got the whole lens really good on each step. It does really work!
I used a kit a detailer friend of mine had given me that came with the cleaner, sandpapers, and sealer. When I got to the sealer and opened it I recognized the smell of it. I'm about 99% sure is was marine exterior varnish. It was kind of amber in color and took about the same time to dry as varnish. It would make sense to use something like that since it's got a lot of UV protectants in it and holds up well.
