Its not you Y2k..... It was a crappy pic.....sorry. From your picture I can tell you I definitely don't have the additional OTW cooler. That is consistent with the dates you gave earlier and proves the
Dealer mechanic was wrong.

After all you've gone through, does that surprise you at all?

The community knowledge here at FTE FAR surpasses that of all but the very top Ford "factory-trained" technicians.

Sadly no I'm not surprised. I'm just glad I did my research and I have this forum to reach out to. Its sad that someone (the dealer mechanic) would speak about something he knows little about when the consequences could be so big for a customer. Thanks again to Y2K for sharing his knowledge. I enjoy working on my truck when it is something I can handle so I would rather have done all the work myself but wrestling the transmission in and out without a lift didn't sound like a good idea and getting the 6.0 cooler for a steal made the dealer a great option.

Jng6 just watch the temp range of trans for awhile. I have otw +small factory on my 2000. Pulling our new TT at about 9500lbs loaded, I never went over 185 dg

I use SG2 for TFT. For now I am not upgrading to 6.0. Win I replace trans I will

Thanks. I have been watching the transmission temperature pretty close. I'm running 160 or below with avmax of 170. 170 was after almost an hour of stop and go traffic in 98 degree temps. Its running a little hotter than I expected but still well within the safe range. My guess is the outside temps being in the 90's has something to do with that.

Petrokiller, from my experience the stock cooler seems to be fine as long as your moving at a descent pace. If your towing slowly or up a steep grade or you are going up a steep grade at slow speed you might be in the transmission temp danger zone. If your sticking with the stock cooler keep an eye on those temps or upgrade before you get stranded.....take care!

DADGUMIT! I pulled local to campground Friday in the heat of the day. HUGE traffic jam up a ridge cut.

Couldn't get over 20mph and TFT hit 203dg. On came the heat and down came the windows. Dropped 10dg pretty quick.

So looks like cooler upgrade has to be done.

I have a 2002. Did the 6.0 mod and it fit perfect. It has 27 rows of cooling vs the 9 rows in the stock 7.3. I bought it from tousley ford And then got a pre cut hose kit from BTS. Truck runs much cooler towing my toy hauler than before

Wow, I don't stop till my tranny gets into the 230's. I really don't think 203 is anywhere near too hot but I'm with you, it's upgrade time.

I agree. I puckered at 228* a bit. Slow windy steep hills. Not towing but ambient temps were 110* and it was a lot of low gear steep driving. Once it hit 228* I pulled over and took some pictures to give it a break. Dropped 50* in less than 10 minutes. Went back up but at least the old dog had a break!

Why? You're right in the middle of normal operating temperature.

I wouldn't stop at 230F, either. I will keep an eye on the temperature once it is above 220F. You can safely go as high as 250F for up to a half hour at a time.

At that temp I do keep an eye on the temperature.

You can safely run as high as 220F ALL DAY LONG and not cause any transmission problems. You can go as high as 250F for no more than a half hour without causing any problems.

Great info. I was under the impression 220 was devastation range. Maybe I will be ok for awhile longer. Holding off is great after the new TT purchase

Not even close. I don't recommend anyone try this for themselves, but here's an article where I know of a transmission that ran at over 450F and survived. Yes, I typed four hundred fifty degrees Fahrenheit! Trophy Truck Transmission Tuner Recalls Enduro Racing Days | Ford Trucks

Here is some data collected on fleet customers 2003 F250 4x4 5.4L 2V engine, 140,000 on the odometer, truck is loaded with utility bed and has hundreds of hours of idle time. The customer concerns are "soft engagement from Park to 1st gear". Transmission will need Rebuild.

Data was recorded under normal driving conditions.
Outside ambient temp = 90 deg F
Relative humidity = 65%

Not exactly what you guys are encountering but relevant. Like Mike posted these units can take more heat than what is "generally" thought. I have recorded temps in 220 deg F-230 deg F in 4x4 Low on soft terrain. Truck operating under those condition for hours and no problem.

What I have experienced is operating in 4 Low on soft terrain is one way to push transmission temps into the upper end of the operating range. Seems to heat the unit faster than towing.....just an observation.

You'd be surprised how many times I'm called Mike. I sure am surprised. It happens a couple times a week. Every week. Maybe I was misnamed all those years ago and I should have been a Mike...
