The oil bath is probably better at filtering air than a paper element when you get down to it.
Maybe they aren't the best for 1/4 mile but have nothing to do with normal acceleration. They are kinda hard to find, even - because so many people ditched them.

I think the truck 292 was rated at 130 gross hp.
That's pretty weak by todays standards, I just don't see this truck lighting up the tires unless I swap in a set of 5.38s like my old CJ had.

Might be "weak" by today's standards - but the original post mentions a top speed or difficulty to reach even 55, that indicates a problem having nothing to do with design of the Y block.

Ted that doesn't necessarily indicate a problem. It could just be geared low.
I need to get a tach on it and see what rpm Im running.

But then that wouldn't be a performance issue related to the engine, which was my point.

Did you check the engine compression? Also the fuel pump rate of delivery?

Brake dragging maybe? It don't take much to pull this little engine down.
Something just aint right though as it should do all of 80mph comfortably.

Yep...I agree.
My first year y-block (239) would run 80. It wasn't overly thrilled doing it, but it would do it without too much trouble.

I think the speedo is off, Im going to check it against the GPS.
I was on a stretch of road doing 45 and cars were whizzing by me at a pretty good clip, normally at 45 Im moving with traffic on that road.
I drove the 66 this afternoon. The 352 has way more get up and go than the 292, maybe Im used to more power.

The Y-Block can be an expensive engine to work on and build up. But it is so sweet when done right and can have plenty of power. Check out Johns site.
Y Blocks forever I think it is.
