Looking for some input here. '99 150, 89K miles. The odometer is periodically "going out" on me. Get this - sometimes I look down while cruising along, and theres my odometer - just fine. Other times I look down, and it's blank. Other times, it's there, but it looks like I have the lights on and the interior setting to the dimmest it could possibly go (can barely read the numbers). Sometimes it's while I'm dirivng. Sometimes, I can be sitting at a stop light - without any movemnet, and Surprise! the odometer numbers black out again. Whats going on?
BTW - even while it's out, it still keeps track of the mileage....
Sounds like a circuit board going bad. But I can't swear to it. Usually if the VSS(vehicle speed sensor) goes bad, the odometer will default to straight lines across it I believe.

It could just be a loose connection. I have a 99 with the same problem. Sometimes when I snap a finger on the plastic in front of the odometer it comes back on. Sometimes it just flicks and sometimes nothing. I work in computers with circuit boards and they usually don't act this way. Usually they get hot and fail or just fail all together. I am planning on tearing into mind to try and find the loose connection. I was hoping someone already had and could save me time.
I just bought my 00 f150 almost a month ago with 54k, it has this problem. The used dealer i bought the truck pulled the cluster and sent it to a certified dealer in Jackson, MI where two loose connections were fixed? I dunno what they did. Once it comes on, it stays on....however.... Racerguy I dunno if you can help with this or not, when you start my truck now, sometimes the odo is on instantly and sometimes it takes up to 1 or 2 minutes before I finally see it. I called the dealer on it, they say that sometimes when it doesn't come on right away there is an electrical problems and they want 50 bucks to do a complete vehicle electrical diagnosis, and somes the odo not coming on right away or flickering could being something else, the only something else that they had for me was poss neutral safety switch going bad......
I have never seen that problem but I dont really think a bad TRS (neutral safety switch in the old days) would cause that. I might be wrong though as bad TRS's can caus ea few different problems. I'd still be leaning towards an intrument cluster problem. If they scan it they can probably rule out other problems so that might be a good place to start.
well the used dealer that i bought my truck from said when i called them today that if the odo didnt act right after the work was done to it then they were told that the ford dealer will have to do that electrical scan and find the problem....so back it go on monday, i'll let you know what i find out since we're all pretty sure the instrument cluster is working correctly.
