My DIY roof rust repair
Hey guys, just picked myself up a 2000 v10 4x4 Ex with 106*** miles and I wanted to clean up some roof rust. So i decided I might as well make a thread of my temporary repair.
here's a little background of the truck. i just bought it off of a very good customer of my dads transmission shop. its was the guys 3rd vehicle and it didn't get driven much except for in the winter and a few other occasions, so it sat alot unfortunately... other than some rust here and their such as on the roof and brake lines, which i replaced with some copper coated lines, and a flaky hood, it was in good condition. he always brought it in to my dads shop for service and if it ever needed anything done, he had it fixed.
my goal in this project is to remove and stop the rust from spreading until i can get a professional spray it along with a new cowl hood. again this is just temporary so im not too worried about how it looks...
anyway, let the fun begin...
heres some pics of the rust and paint before i did anything...
i decided to break out the puddy knife to see what im up against. turns out its a little worse than i fist thought...
after getting a close up i decided it was time to brake out the flap disk on the grinder, i believe i used an 80 grit disk...
Here's the finish product of a couple hours with the flap disk. i did forget to take pictures of the back half of the roof.
after that was over with i went over and double checked everything and made sure i got it all. once everything was clear i cleaned the roof off with some dish soap and went over the whole roof with some 100 grit then some 150 grit sandpaper then wash it again.
next step i took was to primer the whole roof. (i used 2 large cans and one normal size can to primer the whole roof. the smaller can was a white and the others were an almost grey color but like i said, its only temporary...)
thats all i have for tonight. i might have to wait a few days to let the rain dispear to finish up. if anyone has any sugestions or any comments, feel free to help a 19 year old out
Thanks guys
